Well I finally did it. I screwed up and ruined my .50 caliber barrel. It has got a bulge in it just past the breach plug.
I stupidly loaded 2 250g XTP's over 43g of 4759. Boy did that one kick.... Considering that pre screw-up I had a 1.5 inch group at 100 yards, and now its about 4 inches. And all 1 week before gun season here in NY. Ugh!
So...
How much is a new .50 cal barrel? Versus a .45 cal (to go sabotless)?
Thanks,
kb

Versus a .45 cal (to go sabotless)? Thanks, kb We have all done dumb things. I now do the following (say I am shooting a 5 load group): set out 5 bullets set out 5 sabots set out 5 speed loads set out 5 primers set all the shots up, i.e. 1 primer, 1 bullet, 1 sabot, 1 charge 1 primer, 1 bullet, 1 sabot, 1 charge 1 primer, 1 bullet, 1 sabot , 1 charge 1 primer, 1 bullet, 1 sabot, 1 charge 1 primer, 1 bullet, 1 sabot, 1 charge load the charge load the bullet in sabot load bullet and sabot in barrel put in primer shoot If someone interrupts you, and you forget where your at you look at your stuff and you immediately know where you are in the loading sequence. Know your going to mess up and then plan a procedure to minimize problems. You were fortunate, you didn't get hurt and a $200 barrel is alot cheaper than the deductable at the doctor. Best Wishes, Chap

Actually it was 43g not 53.
It was a typo, thanks for pointing that out.
My original post has been edited.
...And here I thought that only my shoulder took a beating on that one.

Also, you might put an indicator mark on your ram rod to show that a round is loaded. Richard

:oIf you do this shooting a sabot-less load you might not be so lucky to only ruin a barrel.
The only sure way to know is to have a wittness mark(s) on the ramrod and use it(them) every time you load. If the ramrod does not show the load all the way down and the normal length NEVER shoot the rifle. Take it apart and even if it's loaded correctly better safe than sorry.

Glad to hear you ar OK. I vote with Deadeye 1 vial of powder, 1 sabot, 1 bullet on the bench befor loading starts. Has eliminited a couple of senior moments. Witness marks are a must too.

The sad thing is that I have many BP rifles, and know better. All my rr's are marked, but I just wasnt paying attention.
I was hunting in the northern zone in NY a couple weeks ago, and never pulled the charge when I was done. When I was at the range, I just loaded it up and let it rip...
I have to admit, though, when I shot the original rr at a doe a couple years ago , it had a bigger kick then this double charge - and didnt damage the barrel.

Same here. Loading a second load of powder and bullet on top of the first one is a sure recipe for making the bulges. Mine was a sharp recoil, but not significantly more than normal, but enough to do the damage for sure! Thanks to Savage for making it tough or both of us might have had a lot more damage done than just a bulged barrel.

I've loaded 2 complete loads on top of one another. I noticed the ramrod didnt go down as far as it should. Pulled it apart and dumped them out before shooting. I always check my gun with the ramrod and didnt that time but luckily noticed after loading the second load. Checking your gun often with the ramrod (knowing where one single charge should be on your ramrod) prevents most mishaps. Sorry you blew a barrel but better than your noodle! Everytime I pick the gun up I check with the ramrod as a matter of course. Just like checking the safety from time to time when you are hunting. Getting in that habbit will hopefully help.

I am glad it is just a ruined barrel. I too appreciate your accepting full responsibility for causing the incident. I think this is another sound reason for discharging the load at the end of a days hunt. At least one should never leave it charged or always leave it charged. A reference mark on the ramrod if great if it is used before every loading. I cringe when I think of what might have happened. Ozark

Well Im off to the range today to verify the scope on my encore. I was pretty excited to use my ML2 this year as I had put a new scope on it and practiced with it.
I havent spilled any blood with the encore yet, so I guess its due. Its been sitting and collecting dust since I had gotten the ML2. (The ML barrel anyway).
As far as accepting responsibility for my own mistakes, I have yet to see ANY gun load itself. A self-loading, semi-automatic, self-cleaning, non-recoiling muzzleloader would be nice, but I cant see that happening anytime soon.
Even I am surprised that I have made it as long as I have. As far as mistakes go, Ive made some duzies. The trick is that we must learn from them, and learn to laugh at ourselves. I have been shooting muzzleloaders for almost 25 years, and I still learn something each time I go to the range.
Remember:
Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.
Watch out, Im going out again. Yes dear, my life insurance IS paid up to date...
