Finally saved up some more newspapers and shot a little more. All were shot at 50 yds, as before.Velocity and penetration slightly less compared to last post due to powder I was using( more accurate. ) Bullets are SST 250, SST 300, and Barnes Original 458 300 gr. Paper was re- packed between shots. The long and the short of it: 250 SST acts like a varmint round, left a huge channel but disintegrated, looked like someone put "Sparkle" paint down the hole from all the micro- fragments. 300 SST even larger channel and was a perfect mushroom. Barnes Original also cut a nice channel and retained 95% of it's wt.! I need a recipe for wet newspaper, got a wheelbarrow full i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/dougva34/Threemorebullets.jpgi8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/dougva34/Bulletsfrontandback.jpg

Great post.
Amazing that the 250 SST still got such good penetration after losing all of that weight.
IMO, this might be perfect if you can guarantee a broadside hit! A bullet that was not on a shot line to hit the heart might destroy it with all of those secondary projectiles.

8-)Now this is my kind of post. A shooter who actually goes and shoots to make his conclusions.
Bob I'm partial to how the 250 grain bullet works on deer. But even only 1.5" extra penetration might work to advantage on elk or moose.
Anyway you look at it or any prefference you have there is nothing like being able to make a conclusion from actual shots fired.

:)nybob, thank's for the great info you have posted.bob what bullet is going to be in your savage this fall. Based on what I've seen in wet paper and for accuracy. I've all but decided the 300 sst holds together SO well and just tonight I put 4 of 'em into a group of 1 3/4 in. at 200 yards. At 200 yds. it still has 1500 fps +/- and 1500 ft. lbs +/- What more can I ask for?

Before I went on a mule deer antelope hunt last fall, I put about 75-100 rounds thru my 30-06 at distances out to 400 yards and found the exact hold over 0-400 and everything in between. My hunting buddy set his 7mm mag to "about 2" high at 100 yds with 5 shots total. He never shot past that distance. We both got our mulies and 'lopes. I did it in 2 shots he in 8.
