Has anyone ever used a Richards Microfit stock on their ML-II ? If so, how hard is it to install ? Should I have a gunsmith do it or can the average handyman do it himself ? They have some really nice stocks and the price is moderate.

I have an Exhibition grade Richard's stock on my ML11 now. It takes several months to receive one and they take quite a bit of finishing work to get the stock smooth. The inletting is good, near a drop in if you get it 99% inletted. You have to get the short action stock, there will be no ramrod groove and you need a wider barrel channel.

order it for the savage model 10 short action, also request no magazine cut out and get a varminter stock it will fit the large muzzleloader barrel, you will have to route out the ramrod slot if you choose to , I did and it turned out beautifully, but if I was to do it again I would just use a takedown ramrod and carry it along seperately. and it's really not that difficult to finish yourself and quite rewarding when your done.

That stock looks great edge. PS It must be hard to shoot though....they put the thumbhole on the wrong side

DonD, is that the black and gray laminate? It seems to have more of a brown/neutral shade to it than most black & gray laminates. I really like the shading on that stock--looks great, but should fade into the shadows of the forest really well.

Also, the schnabble tip and grip cap look darker than rosewood--did you select a different material? And the forend tip on yours doesn't have that weird bubble or swell on the bottom--did you ask them to leave that off? It looks much better that way.
Finally, what butt pad do you have? Did you buy it separately and grind to fit or will they supply prefit, premium (SVL, Pachymar, etc.) pads?

Mountain Man,I agree the bubble had to go,my belt sander took care of that real ouick.I'm not sure the purpose of it but if it was supposed to make the gun look better IMO it failed. The color is black -gray with 10 coats of waterlox on it.Waterlox has been around a long time and has withstood the test of time, plus it is real easy to both work with and touch up.The pad was supplied by Richards and is pachynar grind to fit.All in all I was happy with Richards.I ordered the wrong action #but only the front action screw was of by an 1/8''.when I had it bedded the smith used a recessed over sized pillar and problem solved and it looks kinda neat that way.Should have taken a picture of it.Also installed a square 1/2'' tube with a 3/8'' hole in it to hold the ramrod which also looks nice and keeps the wood from getting banged up.The tip and cap are Epi or Ironwood which is a very dense Brazilian hardwood

Yes I just loosen the rear screw a little and out pops the bolt.re-torque it to my witness mark and away we go,same poi every time.No third pillar needed.

dond, does that cheek saddle get your eye up to scope level without putting lifting your head way up? The ridiculously low comb/poor cheek weld on the factory stock is my second biggest complaint about the 10ML (the first being the bolt-retaining action screw).

Yes ,for my big brain,I mean head it's perfect.I had a 3x12x56 Swaroski on it till the reticle blew two day's before I was leaving on an out of state hunt last October. At the last minute I was stuck buying what I could get my hands on fast ,which is the 3x10x50 that you see on it now. After deer season is over here I'll switch back.Even with the higher ring's it's still right there for me.I think you would like the stock if your leaning that way.I think Paul touched on the 1'' barrel channel with the varmint stock, which gives you a real stable platform for the bench or in the woods and leave out the mag. cutout. The stock feels nice in your hands and with the pad on even with heavy loads its a pleasure to shot.

If I had realized how good their prices are, I might have done that before spending so much time and care to bed my factory stock. However, at least now I feel competent to buy a stock blank, fit it to the action, bed it, and finish it.
But, since I just finished bedding my factory stock, I think I'll wait a while before I go replacing it.
