Well I had a great day hunting with my savage. My first kill came at 9:15 which was a small doe. The at 10:00 a large doe came through the woods at 75 yards. Was on my way to get the quad and shot a coyote at 10:15. Load is 43grs. 4759 Barnes spit-fire EZ and CCI primer. Now the bad news. I went to clean my gun and the vent liner is stuck in the breech. It strip the allen key. Any ideas on how to get it out? I guess I will order a new breech plug on Monday. Though about drilling out the vent liner but I was figured I would try here first.

If the wrench is stripped instead of the vent liner hole you might try this. Start off with a good quality wrench that is plenty hard. Cut off a short length of the wrench about 2" long. You only need the straight part. Now get some spray on carbon remover that you use in engines. I use Yamaha carbon cleaner, but other guys use GM brand and other brands as well and i think they all dissolve carbon pretty good. Soak the breechplug and ventliner in the carbon cleaner and give it plenty of time to work. You might even try a good strong carbeurator cleaner as well although the carbon cleaner should do it. Place the breechplug in a padded vice with the ventliner facing up so you don't damage the threads on the breechplug. Now place your 2" straight piece of allen wrench in the ventliner socket and put a small crescent wrench on it to enable you to turn it. Take a small hammer and lightly tap the top of the allen wrench while you put slight pressure on the crescent wrench. Work slowly and just hold a steady pressure on the crescent while you continue to tap, tap, tap with the hammer. It should eventually let go. Good luck................KerryB

Shane,
Welcome,
A couple of times when using AA5744 my liners were too far gone to get an allen back in there, even the short version as KerryB speaks of, if this is the case, while in the padded vise {a couple of pine 1''x 1 1/4"x 2 1/2" blocks will also work} use a cutoff wheel in a Dremmel tool and cut a slot across the face of the liner, "be careful and don't cut the plug" then using a small cold chisell and hammer, start tapping the outter edges of the slot. I have had to use this method a couple of different times when I first started using this gun, I wasn't using the proper amount, or placement of the anti-seize.
Keep us posted, and sign up, tons of valuable information here you'll never find in any book, these people are awsome, and will find the answer to any question you throw at them...

I will try this and let you know. I joined but was not logged in when I did the original post. Thanks for the help. I have learned a ton from this forum. I will take the time this week and put together a lessons learned from the past two weeks. I am not new to muzzleloading just the savage. Wife bought me the gun and scope for Christmas last year. I had a great morning yesterday its one that I will always remember. Thanks again.

welcome to the board. I've been there also, however my approach wasn't so subtle. I took a #16 nail, bent it into the shape of an allen wrench, and mig welded it to the liner. it's kind of a tight spot to weld, but it's a sure fire method. I still have mine laying in my junk room, been meaning to mail it back to savage just for a laugh.

Shane,
I had a stuck ventliner that I rounded the hex socket out as well. I tried soaking, tapping, notching, etc, but couldn't get it to break free. My last gasp was to drill it out with a drill press and use an ez-out extractor. I was able to choose a drill/extractor size that was small enough that I didn't mess up the threads in the breech plug.

You also might try applying some heat from a propane torch to the breech plug and then use a good allen wrench or the method described by Kerry. It should come out! Richard

I ordered a replacement breechplug from Savage on Monday. I have not tried any of the possible solutions but will be when I get the new one. We still have another weekend of firearm season so I don't want to miss it. I will have a week to get it out between regular firearm and muzzleloader season. Thanks for all the ideas I will let you know which one works.
