I'm new to using muzzleloaders. I have a T/C White Mountain Carbine given to me years ago as a gift. I've been using it on the range and very much enjoy shooting it. All my past hunting experience is with conventional modern guns. My question to hunters is how you carry your sidelock in the field when hunting. Do you use half cock or what?
All the manuals say not to rely on half cock and don't prime until you are ready to shoot. Of course, that's an insurance company talking and not practical advice. So how do you guys do it?
Thanks,
Mike

Half cocked is about the only choice you have.

You would have to do some extensive modification, but if you look at some auction sites, such as Amoskee,Greg Martin's and such, you can see some English guns that had a bar that could be slid forward on the hammer and would thus block the hammer fall. Is not capping the gun until a shot is near feasible?

There are some do-dads that fir over the nipple preotecting it from accidental discharge, with a flinter a Hammer stall is made of leather and slipped overe the frizzen/hammer to prevent sparking, I have in the past put s soft thick 1/2" piece of leather over the cap and let the cock ride on it , it will cushiom the impact to the cap if something goes wrong. the downside is that the cock can be accidently hoked on a twig and the leather can slip out letting the cock fall on the cap.
