Please feel free to share any pet loads you have in your favorite caliber rifle for varmint hunting.

Have fun but please start low on any loads posted here and work back up slowly. Your gun may not stand a load another gun will.

This message board is mainly for the discussion of varmint hunting with modern center fire rifles, but one can also post about hunting varmints using the Savage Model 10-I and 10-II as well as any other "black powder gun". Please don't post about any of the long range cartridges like the 50BMG. This is not our cup of tea. Have fun and go get em!

I'd like to try and call in a few coyotes. I'm seeing more and more "dog" prints in the woods behind the house, so I'd like to thin them out a bit. Any suggestions on what to use (gun and call) and how (and when) to set up? Specifics please! Both electronic and mouth calls are legal.

The property is 110 Yds wide by 550 Yds deep (or so). The area near the house is clear, and it is 100 Yds from the barn to the woods. The woods is approx. 400 Yds deep and continues on the neighbors property on both sides. To the back of the property is a 20 acre mowed meadow, surrounded by woods. I'll be hunting by myself and have a varied selection of guns. 12 ga, .223, .257 Wby Mag, 30-06 and the Savage ML's of course!

I'm not concerned with the pelts, I just want to thin out the 'yotes. One did come within 20 Yds of a buddy that was bow hunting here last week, but it heard him draw back and he never got a chance to shoot. It was hobbling on 3 legs........

A local trapper traps on a farm that's about 1/2 mile away and he took 7 'yotes last year. (he live traps them)

I've got a Johnny Stewart call and it works great. For a rifle, go with the 223.

The 223 would probably be the best choice so long as you are accurate with it. The best way to call coyotes with a hand call is with an open reed. Take a look around your local stores and/or check out some websites like www.allpredatorcalls.com and find yourself a nice open reed so you can produce coyote howls, whines, barks and a variety of small game distress calls.

Early mornings and late evenings are best for calling, coyotes will circle downwind of the sound source as they approach. Don't let them get down wind... they WILL smell you. Good luck and stop by MidwestPredatorHunters forums if you have any luck... there are a lot of Indiana guys on there that could help you out.

Most calls work sometimes. None always. I like to use the buddy system having the caller a hundred yards or more down range protected in a ditch or over a hump for safety. The shooter can hear the calls and generally get more shots as the coyotes circle the caller intent on that spot. This provides the shooter a wide range of observation and works well. The caller must trust the shooter to not let a Bobcat leap on him. Lol. Seriously it works well.

If you have a clear line of sight from your house here is the I like to do it. Stake out a downer ie dead cow pig etc. I like to put it about 200 yrds from the house. Plug in a spot light with a red cover on it and forget about it (leave it on 24/7). As a kid my buddies and I would just watch movies and the "bait". If a yote was seen we would ease open the window and let it fly. Over the years I've dumped more yotes this way than I ever did calling. Call it lazy or what ever but the yotes will keep coming over for dinner as long as it is cold and food sources are limited. If the downer is froze solid and you don't have any visitors then take a chain saw and open up the guts. If your real lazy, just place one of the I.R. drive way detectors and it will chime in your house when visitors come calling for their last free meal (just set it to the critter you want i.e about a foot off the ground works well for yotes and does not trip when the family cat stops by for a freebie). Don't know your game laws but the same works real well on coons. Just dump a bunch of corn, garbage etc and you'll have way to much fun as well.
This works much better than calling in your scenario.

I forgot the bullet!!! Try some of the barnes varmint grenades. No ricochets and every thing you have seen about them is true. I just push them as fast as I can. I like them in all available cals. Will not lie to you and brag about great groups with them but they will normally hang in with other bulk bullets.
