Have any of you tried using cast lead bullets, either saboted or sabotless, in your ML? I'd think it would work but haven't tried it. Thot I might make them of a very soft alloy(if saboted) for expansion and weight retention. Harder alloys might work for sabotless loads?

I'm thinking of "normal" rifle or handgun bullets, not something like round, maxi or minie balls

Savage shoots much faster than normal lead loads so a hard cast bullet in a sabot would probably be best.

I've used a LEE #90347 mold, 190gr. .451 diameter, MMP short sabot. 20 grains N-350 = 1850fps, 22.5 grains N-350 = 2000 fps. Pure lead tended to swell into the slots of the sabot and lead the barrel slightly. Wheel weights worked just fine. For hunting, in a hot mold ,you can pour a soft lead nose into the mold ,with a dipper made with copper wire and a spent .38 special case. Top it off quickly with really hot wheel weight lead to fuse them together. Accuracy is dependent on the quality of your work, how well you clean the crud out of the lead. Generally 2" to 3" is not hard to get. Weighing and sorting also helps Casting bullets is a very broad subject. I'll bet most people don't know you can heat treat a cast wheel weight and double the brinell hardness. IMO , the book below is probably the best book on the subject. mshm

I like to shoot hard cast 0.452 laser cast semi wad cutter keith in a RCR with my standard load of RL-7 70gr. Accuracy in the 2-3 inch range at a 100yrds.

Hope those 410 wads work in my 40. Think of this. A cast bullet from scrounged lead (free), wads at $9 / 500, a primer and a bit of powder makes for pretty cheap plinkin'. Pretty close to shootin' a .22 ;D Boy the turtles in my pond better watch out for sure next summer!!

Before I ever heard of this site, I bought the Precision Rifle bullet and sabot combination, and shot them with 5744. I still have what is left, almost all of it. Shortly after that I found this Board. Someone, Edge I think but could have been anyone, convinced me not to shoot lead bullets at live deer. So I stuck them back and went to something else.
I still have them if you want them.

Here's a cast bullet from a mold I made. it throws a 300 grain bullet and is .453 dia. I used it when I started with my savage, I was using on top of a charge of lil gun powder. I had great accuracy the first year ( kill several deer and even shot a bull moose with it) then the inconsistency of lil gun forced me to try a different powder. With that different bullets. I may revisit the cast bullets (alittle harder alloy ) in a sabotless application I only worry about leading.

In my experience, you could push a heat treated ,gas checked, lubed bullet to around 1400 fps. At that point , would start leading the bore ,progressively getting worse. A couple of jacketed bullets shot would get the worst of it out. Unless you want to go to the electrolysis cleaning systems,I would not go the cast route without a sabot. Typical velocitiies with pure lead wad cutters runs 700-900 fps ,and the lead like the dickens. If you plan on shooting a hard cast bullet at game it should have a wide flat meplate, and it won't expand .
Just my opinion. mshm

smokeeter, What kind of mould did you use?

Do you think that the Harvester Scorpion Gold (which is a plated bullet with antimony added to the core) would lead the bore if shot sabotless?Slipshod

smokeeter, What kind of mould did you use? It's one that I made by modifying a Lee mold that was reshaped to a .45 cal spitzer with a slight boat tail.

Smokeeter:
I'd be interested in the process you used. Would you be willing to share your secret or do the work for a price?
