I finally had a few minutes to get back to the range with my 45-70 Handi rifle and better scope. I also bought some snap caps so I could get some trigger time. I still have a problem with the trigger weight which I will fix in the coming months, but now have a baseline for accuracy. I'm sure that if Dave or someone with good form, etc would be able to have this sub MOA in no time....but I don't have the patience Since the 4 shot group is almost all horizontal I will take the blame as it is almost certainly me strangling the stock ;D I also had a few misfires, which may be from old primers or me not pulling to trigger completely to the rear. If I can, I'll make a breechplug in the next week or so and test as a ML. As a side note, the horizontal hole @6 o'clock was a sabot test that went bad and the bullet hit sideways! Not a good sign. It was a 200 grain 35 caliber bullet over the same charge as the 300 grain bullets but the sabot broke on muzzle exit so I got no useful information edge. PS here is a link to my first attempt a few weeks ago: dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thread=1178499848&page=1

If that's your start then I'm staying tuned for "Take III". That is a better start than I had with my 10ML-II. I can also picture that group even tighter after a trigger job. Ed

:)bud that's a great start.i can't wait till you get your breech plug installed and shoot it as a ml.the trigger is most likely your culprit in that group.your a better shot than you will admit .

:)Interesting. If you have Varget, consider giving it a try. I really like it with the speed of powder you're using. I've read somewhere - think I found the link on "varmint Al's" web site_ about how to accuritize the NEF/H&R by semi-floating the forearm and lightening the trigger. I sent a H&R Ultra rifle in to the factory and they "smoothed" the trigger and it was MUCH nicer. Your project seems like a good one.

Brings back memories of how I used to handload for my Ruger #3 45-70 and used 4227, Unique, and 4198. The Lyman cast bullet manual (can't find the date on it, but I bought it in 1973) lists for a 292 gr cast (mold # 457191) 27 - 30 gr 4227 for a max vel of 1545 and for a 385 gr (mold # 457124) 25 - 28 gr for a max vel of 1405. I never had any leading problem with my cast bullets at these loads and they shot very well in my gun.
I also had some more "ambitious" loads for the 300 gr jacketed bullets with 4227 that would push it up to about 1850 fps. I think they came from the Lyman 45th reloading handbook. As I remember, in that light 5 1/2 # gun, they hurt and I flinched so bad I never got very good accuracy with them. I am sure your Handi Rifle is very similar in weight and recoil.
4227 was my favorite powder as I got my best accuracy with it in my gun. Unique was great for light loads for plinking. My Lyman manual lists 14.5 to 18.0 gr Unique for the 292 gr cast, max vel about 1460. One grain less for the 385 gr. Wish I still had my notes on the accuracy I got with those loads.

Oh yeah, floating the forend via an O-ring worked very well. I found the Handi Rifle to be very sensitive to forend placement on the bags. Once I floated the forend, honed the trigger, and added a little bedding compound as a pillar, it worked very well. Every barrel I own (5 centerfire) will shoot MOA or better at 100 yards for 5 shots. Let me see if I can dig up a more recent version of that article.

I also noticed that my Handi Rifle rifle was extremely sensitive to how it sat on the front bag. Same load that shot 1.5 inches when the rifle was rested under the hinge pin would shoot 4-5 inches when rested at the end of the fore stock.
Its definitely something to consider.
