OK, so I sent my $$$ and got four of Randy Wakemans hardened vent liners. Upon inspection of them (as compared to the original Savages) I found two differences. 1. they were .014" shorter than the originals (does not seem like a big deal) but 2. they were flat across the end (end were the threads are) as compared to the Savages which have a recessed cone with the .030" opening starting at the bottom of said cone? Now maybe, they do not shoot any different? Have not tried them yet. However, here is what I am thinking.......That 90* surface with only a .030" hole is facing the flame from that primer right? Seems a lot of that fire is going to bounce off that surface, save for the little hole? With Savages, that "cone" or larger opening, isn't it going to capture more of that flame and direct it into the tiny orfice than the RW model? Again, these only came in the mail Saturday when I got back from the range. Does anyone have any opinions on this?
Maybe Randy could comment?
Also, does anyone know where to obtain these drill bushings used to modify the breach plug? I have checked several industrial supply houses and cannot find any with a .030" hole? I would think the biggest one, Manhattan Supply Co. (MSC) would have them but they only go as small as 1/16". Might they be a special order? I have not tried Grainger yet.
I like the idea of the drill bushing as the amount of material removed would be smaller than modifying with the recessed vent liner.
Here is another thought.....How about machining the head of the vent liner somewhat smaller? This way, when you drill to recess the hole, it would be much smaller in diameter, similar to the drill bushing. The only thing you would loose would be a little surface contact with the bevel; which I would not think is too critical. Thus you get the advantage of a "ldrill bushing" (so to speak)without having to contend with boring out the hole to the exact diameter for a press fit. Just drill with a bit that gives you the same profile as the vent liner, tap your thread and screw in. If you are using the hardened or carbide vent liner, you would have to reduce the diameter with a diamond or green wheel.
