| | Ballistics Test 300gr SST 2450fps « Thread Started on Mar 30, 2008, 7:42pm » | |
My second test for the day was the 300gr SST. While I’d say the 300gr Bonded SW preformed reasonably better than it’s 250gr counter part, I’d say the 300gr SST preformed a LOT better. In fact, I’d say that the 300gr SST preformed as well if not better than the 300gr Bonded SW. Since I only fired one shot, I can’t rule out a fluke, but regardless the results were pleasing.
Criteria: Date: 03/30/08 Temp: 32 degrees Bullet: 300gr SST Load: 75gr Reloader #7 Impact Velocity:2442fps Penetration:26 ½" Expanded Diameter: 3/4" Retained Weight:219 gr, 73%
Like the 250gr version, the 300gr SST expanded quickly and did a lot of damage to the first 6 or 7 inches of the PG block. The 300gr SST also shead some weight during this time, but not near as much as the 250gr SST. In fact, I would say that when it comes to weight retention, the difference between the 300gr SST and the 300gr Bonded Shock Wave, (3% difference) is insignificant. Again, I had to hang a tarp over the back so that the wound channel shows up in the picture. Also, the front block is one that I had preformed my “calibration” tests on earlier in the week. I had fired all the pellets about an inch from the edge of the block in hopes that they would not interfere with later testing, and that worked.
Again, in the picture below it’s hard to make out the exact wound cavity, but you can generally see that there’s not much difference between this and what the 250gr version did.

This picture came out a lot better than the one for the Bonded SW. I’m going to say the bullet penetrated 26 ½" because it looks like it bounced back a little bit. It does look like it may have started to tumble, but again the bullets path in the PG blocks was straight, so I can’t complain. You can see here that there is still a little bit of the bullets trunk that has not expanded (maybe 1/8"). This was the same situation for the 300gr Bonded SW. By comparison, both of the 250gr bullets flattened out like a dime which leads me to believe that they are not quite enough bullet for the gun.

I’d say that the expansion of the 300gr SST was just a little under 3/4", which is honestly a hair less than the 300gr Bonded SW, but not enough to matter to me.
Conclusion: At 26 ½" of penetration, and a straight bullet path, I would say that the 300gr SST preformed a LOT better than it’s 250gr counter part. It out penetrated the Bonded SW bullets by 4" too. I think this would be an excellent choice for white tails. I’m glad that I have 24 rounds of it left Honestly, I like the way the mushroomed 300gr Bonded SW looked better. It looked as though it had expanded to a larger diameter and stayed that way for more of it’s travel through the PG block, which would explain why it penetrated 4" less. I would think that either of these 300gr bullets should be able to smash through the front shoulder and do plenty of damage to the vitals on a white tail.
Thanks, Mark

I think the Savage was as I understand built around the 300 grain bullet.

Nice report! My Savage really likes the 300 gr. SST's. Were you using the SST with the polymer tip or the newer ones that have the new rubbery FlexTip technology? The reason I ask is that I've only shot the older style polymer tips but when I ordered new ones last fall from Midsouth, I received the new style SST's with the FlexTips. I haven't had the chance to shoot any of them yet. Thanks again for the hard work and the report!

The new Flex Tips. I don't have any of the old style in 300gr, and if they don't make them any more, I see no reason to try to find them.
Thanks, Mark
