I finally got it together and shot it. Let me just say, my first impression of the barrel is really good. The machine work is excellent. Putting it together and headspacing it is easy. Just follow the advice from this board. OK - Now this was not done at any super prestigious - fancy range, it was done out of my basement with a piece of cardboard nailed to a sassafras tree 97 yards from my muzzle. A ProChrono chronograph is setting 12ft from my muzzle too to verify velocity. I started with 58grains of 10x, crush rib sabots, and 195grn barns, std breech plug. I got lucky on my first adjustment and shot #2 almost hit the dead center. Pic one is of shots 2,3,4 out of my new set up. I was starting to like it already. I increased by 2 grains at a time shooting 5shots until I reached 63 grains. My velocity is around 2,450 and here is a 5 shot group. I have allot of experimenting to do yet. I like the grouping but I am not at the velocity I would like to acheive shooting sabotless. After that, then I will give sabotless a shot.

Definitely looks promising. Curious how you're recovered sabots look as the velocity increases? Bases holding up ok?

:)Jeremy congrats on your first shot's with your new .45 that is one nice group.when you get a chance try some h-4198 between 58 to 63grs your velocity will go way up.your load right now is very low pressure and will probably be unstable in hunting conditions.for example 63grs of 4198 will give you a velocity of 2650fps with the bullet your using and will be in the 39,000psi range.very nice start can't wait for future reports.

Great start. Your thoughts on the recoil? Overall experience with the 45? Do you have both Harvester sabots to try?

8-)If any of you are new to the board (shooting the standard 50 caliber rifle) and wonder why several shooters have decided to go to 45 caliber, this post is the answer.
At this point in history I have helped numerous shooters move to 45 and 40 caliber rifles. The number of reports like this one almost equals the number of shooters. In fact I've had no tell me moving to 45 did not work out the way they would like.
I know not everybody can pay the extra for a custom barrel. So I will continue to try to give as much help to the standard 50 caliber rifle as possible. One thing I've got in mind is proving some loads for 50 caliber sabot-less shooting. I'll be working on that when the weather warms a small amount.
Still I support the smaller calibers not because I see ANYTHING wrong with the original. I do it because there are a lot of shooters with a lot of different interest.

[/quote] Jeremy, Very nice groups, especially for the first time out. RB, Money can be an issue to some when it comes to the custom work. Speaking for us common 50 caliber shooter, it just hard to justify when every deer we shoot at is dying with this dinosaur that we call a 50 caliber. Steve

It was around 34degrees saturday morning when I was shooting. As far as the pressure, My primers were black and sooty at 58grains and the base of the sabots not distorted at all. As I made it to 63 grains the primers cleaned up a little and were more gray residue. The bare sabots look like they can be taken up a little more but are flaring pretty good with random petals getting ripped off. As far as recoil, my perception is that its not bad. My favorite load in my 50 was 76 grains of 10x and the BO. That kicked a little , but I liked it. This is definetly less than that. I would compare it to a 20gage slug gun. Another important thing is that this was all done with the standard 209 winchester primer. Somewhere along the way, I never realized I was supposed to be using a magnum primer. Oh well, its worked pretty good so far, but I will be ordering the CCIM far future shooting.

Great start Jeremy! I hope mine will have the same blessing. It does seem like the Pacnors are shooting very good on their first attempt. I'm not sure if its because of the match barrel or is the .45 less fussy.

Nice shooting and a great start!
I was getting approx. 2550fps with 62gr of 10X and the 200XTP with a regular blue Harv. sabot last summer.
Knurling and the regular Harv. might help with the speed some, should give a tighter fit.
H4198 will give higher velocity like Dave said at those charge weights. 10X seems to burn at about the same rate as H322 from the side by side comparison shooting both sabotless.

Jeremy.......Nice shooting! That is why I ordered my .45 barrel. I got tired of trying to make my Savage .50 shoot like my bench guns. Richard

Both the crushed rib and noncrushed rib Harvesters are blue. Jeremy was shooting the crushed ribbed. Most of the other .45 threads were shot with the non.crushed ribbed. Some have reported that the nonribbed sabots loads a little tighter!

Jeremy,
I missed what twist and bbl length you went with. Is it a 1:22 twist?
