I have a Remington RB stamped 40 x 3 1/4 on the barrel.I've tried a 40-90 Sharps straight case in it and its too long. I really want to shoot this old rifle, its a #1 but I can't find anyone who can tell me what cartridge to use.Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I think I'll enjoy this forum.

To the best of my knowledge, a 40-90 Sharps straight is indeed 3 1/4 on case length. Perhaps you could look into making a casting of the chamber. I've never done this before, but it will positively identify what the proper ctg. is...I hope this was helpful

blackknee, the Remington RB #1 was produced in a variety of calibers from .40-50 to .50-70 centerfire.
What you may have is a .40-70 that has a straight case length of 2.5" and an OAL length of 3.25" hence the 3 1/4 markings .
Brass can be formed from .405 WCF (Winchester) cases. Custom brass for this caliber can be expensive.
The .40-70 straight is the favorite silhouette caliber of Mike Venturino, nationally acclaimed sports writer/ comp target shooter and lover of the old BP guns..
As for bullet dia Vintage guns vary from .403 to .409. Most modern barrels are cut for .408" bullets.
The .40-70 case holds 61 grains FFG using a 400 gr bullet and a card wad ( tablet backing) with an appx velocity of 1276 fps using a Federal 210 primer.
The .40-70 straight is also an excellent medium game cartridge. I hope this info helps, but this is just my guess based on the info you provided. Pocampo

As a sidenote the .40-70 was made in a straight case and also a bottleneck case as was the .40-90.
Cartridge / case Length / OAL .40-70 Sharps Bottleneck/ 2.25" / 2.85" .40-70 Sharps Straight/ 2.50" / 3.21" .40-90 Sharps Bottleneck/ 2 5/8"/ 3.225" .40-90 Sharps Straight/ 3.25" / 3.925"
Without knowing if the gun you have has a .40 straight or bottleneck chamber it is hard to say what the OAL is. I also do not know if Remington marked there #1 RB barrels for case length or OAL cartridge length. If you can't tell by looking in the chamber as Frosty said ,a chamber casting should tell you for sure what size it is. Pocampo

I appreciate all the info.I will probably have someone do a casting for me.Someone else I was talking with suggested that it maybe chambered for a 40-110 Winchester Express cartridge.
