Well I am a varmint hunter but until this post I never considered using a MLer to do it with. Now I gonna have to give it a try. I need a good .40 caliber gun for this I'm thinking. Jack

Got one right here! My varmint arsenel currently consists of the following:
.17HMR for the little fellers out to 150yds or so .204 Ruger for medium range stuff out to about 300yds .22-250AI with a 8 twist barrel shooting the heavy bullets (75-80gr) for the long shots
Naturally, all of them are Savages ;D ;D

I was out groundhog hunting last night. I was using my Browning 1885 in a 22 Hornet, I also use a Rem. 722 in 222. Several weeks ago I connected with the 40cal. flinter. Great sport.

Boy that is one thing I miss, hunting groundhogs.... That was one of my favorite pastimes when I lived in Ohio. I had 5 dif. farms I would hunt them on & I would go to the one particular farmer every year & ask him & he would say I could hunt as long as I killed ALL the groundhogs. When I was a kid I had this lil dog that was what we called a Rat Terrier but was larger than the rat terriers they have today & weighed in at a whoppin 25# of highspeeed energy. I would hunt roundhogs with her & man she was he// on wheels. She would sneak up on them & being extremely quick, she would beat them back to their hole & turn around & would grab them right by the face & just shake them & snap their necks. Groundhog, possum, squirrel, didn't matter to her, it was history. And if she didn't get there in time to fight the groundhog, she would try to dig it out. She would spend hours digging in that hole if you let her & she would dig completely out of sight. Boy she was allot of fun for a kid to take to the farm.. You could spend all day with her there & it was a never ending adventure there.... ;D www.custommuzzleloaders.com

Well I'm going to hopefully get out to western Kansas in the next few weeks to do some prairie dog hunting. Sure am interested in the new Ruger .204 caliber rifle for this type of hunting and think it will be a good barrel addition to my Encore.

Loggy, that is a nice one and sure made a good looking rug. ;D
Those blasted things were all over the place here a few years ago but now they have thinned out a bit. I know they are murder on deer because of all the deer hair I fond where they relieved themselves. I'm glad they have been thinned out here, but would like to get one like the one you have. ;D Nice going!

Thanks guys. Dave K, it was late doe season and he was hot on the ass of a button buck. The buck went past me and about 40 yds behind him was the yote. The BB's legs were wobbly and tongue out lookin like ready to go down. I was carryin a 35 Whelan w/250 grain bullets. The yote went past me real close and I hit him rear of head and bullet exited out his mouth. Unbelievable, I didnt screw up lip skin, nose plus no teeth missing. When I pulled the trigger I thought oh heck, probably blew his head off. A taxidermist dream shot for sure! Estimated live weight pushin 60 lbs for this big ole boy. Heres a pic of him hangin around at my camp not causin much trouble: www.hunt101.com/img/165240.jpg [/img]

Yeah, that little button buck looked about the same size of the coyote. It was doe season and I could of shot the button but then the yote never would of offered me a shot. I gutted yote and drug back to my stand and didnt see another deer the rest of the day. I'm sure his scent was so strong that there wasnt a deer on my side of the mountain. ;D
My Dad who has passed away, was a taxidermist so I have some other stuff to post up as things get movin along. Killed a real nice bobcat in Alabama several years ago and got the whole cat mounted walking on a log w/mouth open.. One of my Wifes favorites. lol!
Bought a 243 couple month ago and plan to get out and try some yote calling this Fall/Winter if I fill my deer tags. ;D

Thanks Jack. Ole Yote has been in our living room on the small sofa ever since he was welcomed to our home. Funny how our dogs never want to go into that room. ;D
An inch or so on that shot either way not even a good mortician could of reconstructed his head. ;D

yeah that was a nice one come down here and hunt some old coyotes with me i usually use a shotgun or a 3030 winchester. theres a few coyotes in here that may push 75 lbs im not sure. but on average about the same as yours. ive shot at one black coyote but i missed. i miss judged distance first time i had ever been out huntin them . i was usin my shotgun of all guns. i felt like a dummy for missin with a scatter gun. but i hope to go again here soon. i try to use that call i got from a friend of mine. well i guess i better go talk to yall later BADGER

Sounds like you have some nice size ones down your way Badger! I'm going to try some callin this year. I got mine durin the PA doe season that used to be in December after buck season. We pretty much have open season as long as you have an (unused) Big Game Tag in ur possession if a cetain season is in etc like bear or deer. Other than that wide open for yotes.

I carry a 17hmr almost every day for predator control on our game farm mostly for egg eating gritters. Racoons, Skunks foxes sometimes I will see a coyote, A couple of years ago we had a beaver problem and that proved quite a task. Them heads are quite small when they are swimming. They were damming a field and that was killing our pines. I need something with a little more range though that is also not too loud. Redclub

Just got back from Lamar, CO. I went through 250/22-250, 200/270 and 250/270. I probably killed 300 p dogs over 3 days. My friend did better than I did.

I hate coyotes , I shoot everyone I see. They are thick in my part of Indiana. I shot one last year at apox 15 feet with my ruger redhawk. He was circlin some deer I was watching, I heard him and we saw each other at the same time, he whirled and ran, I stuck my right hand out with the 44 and and hit him DA. Too bad for him. bunch of flea bags\ Rifleman

Loggy, that coyote looks huge to me. Guess I don't know enought about them to say though. The ones I see running around are more like scrawny shepherd/huskies or double/triple size foxes. Do you think you trophy was a coy-dog mix. The pictures are amazing and almost look wolf xize.

rdtimmjr : I'm currently out of town on a little laptop/phones line connection so cant access my pics.
This weekend i will post a pic of a large Quebec Timber Wolf I killed and u wil see the distinct differnces.
My PA yote may have been something within a State Record category and in retrospect I wish I would of taken him to a PGC Field Office.

:oLoggy,
That's one huge coyote. They don't grow near that big here in SW OK. but they are thick as fleas on a dogs back. I'm sure I'll destroy a few with my 10MLII this year. Can't wait.

I've found that for the .17HMR (as with any rimfire), its best to get a box of each and see what it prefers. When new, mine really liked the CCI ammunition and wouldn't shoot the Hornady worth a hoot. Then after about 500rds, it flipped 180 degrees and now prefers the Hornady. Why Got me......thats just how it is. The Remington ammo has always been middle-of-the-road in my gun, but I know other guys who swear by it in theirs. Haven't tried the Federal stuff yet.
I also just picked up a brick of Hornady's ner 20gr XTP loads for the .17HMR, and so far have had good results with them at the range. They seem to have a really thin jacket on them, and the hollow point is put in after the bullet is made so I'm a bit concerned how they will perform on game. The hgher BC and minimal reduction in velocity (175fps compared to the .17gr offerings) should prove beneficial, but it the jacket won't hold the bullet together its a lost cause. Hopefully a G-hog will wonder out infront of me at the range one of these nights to do some "splatter factor" testing of its performance.
