OK I am heading out to the range on the 1st. I have Hornaday .452 250gr hp/xtp bullet's (Hornaday sabot's #6751 high velocity .45cal .452 240gr xtpmag and 300gr xtp mag). I also have Hornaday 250gr SST and the same sabot. I have powder's accurate arms 5744 and IMR 4759. 2 packets of WW 209 primer's.Going to clean the gun thoroughly tomorrow and lube the plug and vent liner..Going to take my powder trickler and scale's (digital or beam)? What else other than normal range supplie's would you recomend?

Hi droptine
I would suggest you find some vials to measure you powder at home. Unless your bench is completely out of the wind it will make measuring loads at the range real hard! I tried this too the first time out and even a small breeze will move the beam up and down.
Don't forget stapler and ear protection! Past recoil pad ain't a bad ideal either!

I have those in the range bag... And I am taking my lead sled. I have some speed loader's to measure up a few loads with ... But Looking for another way to keep the powder in

May want a few patches, dry ones, for between shots. Some do some don't.
Take your tools too! A good range session could go bad if you accidently put a bullet down before the powder and have to disassemble. Occationally a patch will stick too.
This should go without saying......Put your ramrod back where it belongs before each shot.
Your load choices will not produce heavy recoil....unless you are using the factory supplied butt plate. May not need the sled which may put your scope at risk more so then plain old sandbags and a mushy shoulder.
Have fun.

You might want to use an alcohol patch between shots. If you want to get use to the way your rifle shoots, I'd leave the lead sled at home, and after sighting in the rifle, shoot from hunting positions. The sled is fine for extented session's with max loads, for sighting in a couple of sandbags is the ticket. If recoil proves a problem, a past shoulder pad will do nicely Good Luck

I ususlly use it just to sight in then shoot from a rest. In hunting situations I will be shooting from a window sill with a sandbag and the shoulder. The main reason I use the sled is to eliminate any question as to whether or not I might have pulled the shot. ..I do have a Sim's pad on it. But my shoulders are old and tired..they usually wake me up before my alarm does..But I live with it for now. Thank You Drop

I keep my single load of 70 gr H4198 in some 7 mm WSM cases, I cap them with a disposable ear plug. The ear plug of choice is orange closed cell foam. When I was trying different weights of powder I would write the appropriate information on the outside of the case with an indelible Sharpie marker. To remove the writing for another day, I write over the old markings with the same marker and quickly wipe them off with a rag. The 70 gr load is almost too much for the WSM case and ear plug combination.

I am glad you had a good trip.
I tried hph 12 sabots and hornaday 250 xtp .45 caliber bullets over 70 grains of h4198. There is a shack at the range and I was going to weigh some different duplex loads with 4759 as a starter the batteries on the scale were not up to 20 degree weather. The bottom fell off the tripod I use for the chronograph. This actually may have been a good thing as the bullet would never have cleared the chronograph. All the range sand bags were frozen hard as a rock and I ended up using a Sportsmans warehouse mechanical rest. Probably another good thing, I could shoot that sitting sidesaddle so I didn't have to take off the snowshoes. I may have forgotten to mention there is a couple of feet on the ground.

Now that is a diehard Savage shooter.

It was a balmy 28 to 30 degrees here..but sunny ..a little windy so I couldnt measure powder very accurate there..so the last group was 2 inches at 100 yds..I am happy with that... My first group ever today was 50 yds and all 3 were touching..When I can post pic's I will. I was there for about 3 hours..but I dressed in layers with windshear and fleece..So I never even got cold. But I did have 2 primers out of ten that were backed out pretty good. I had to help them out of the peimer holder from the face of the bolt with a screwdriver. Could this be from pushing to hard on the ramrod when loading? Compressing the powder to much? Drop

Drop, when you have a primer stuck in your bolt just recock the bolt and dry fire on it and usually it will come right out.
