Just curious if people use the short starters for sabot and sabotless loading. If you do is a spin jag needed too? Anybody ever use a barrel guide? Thanks Rex

Spin jag is all I use, in the field carry it around in my pocket, at the range I have it attached to my range rod. I have both the spin jag loader and the original that I use in cleaning

I use a spin jag for all my loading. The spin jag rotates with the load as it goes down the bore and to me it is a useful tool to have. With the way my muzzle crown is machined no starter is required even with tight loads. My shooting combinations are with sabots. Not absolutely sure as to what you mean by “barrel guide”. If you are referring to a guide for keeping the ramrod centered to the bore and from contacting the muzzle crown the answer is yes.

I always use a short starter. My starter is drilled out to avoid any tip distortion when working with polymer tipped bullets so no jag is needed for starting.

Rex, I ordered the .45 caliber Spin-Jag bullet starter and the Spin-Jag loader from Phil at Spin-Jag the other day. The Spin-Jag bullet starter is a guide and started all in one. You can view a short film clip on it on the Spin-Jag site if you haven't already. It reminds me a bit of the Bad Bull starter and looks like the best one available. The Bad Bull starter is awesome but you have to order their rifle to get it. I don't know of a better starter, offhand, than the Spin-Jag or I would probably have ordered that one. It's expensive at $29.00 as is the loader at around $17.00 but worth it if you want the best. www.spinjag.com/movies_spinjag.html

I probably didn't make myself too clear. I have a spinjag now but never have used a short starter. With my new .45 barrel I was thinking of trying some sabotless loads. I know they might be hard to start so I was wondering if a person needed the spinjag on the starter too? When I said barrel guide I was refering to a guide to keep bullet straight on starting.
Sag- I didn't see that before! That looks exactly what I'm talking about! ;D

For my sabotless bullets I have a round ball (palm) starter. I screw on a drilled out tip that was included in some pack I got a long time ago. No SpinJag needed.

Rex, My Spin-Jag bullet starter arrived today. It's much more impressive in person than seen in the video ! It has the polymer guide housing with a white nylon insert to reduce friction. I thought the handle might be polymer too from seeing the video but was pleased to discover it's metal. Overall, I'm more than pleased with its construction. Looks like it will easily last a lifetime with minimum care.

If you have the starter, do you still need to precision loader or is the starter enough to get the bullet centered?
If the precision didn't add much after the starter, the regular spin jag would be nice as it can do double duty for cleaning as well.

That's a good question, rangeball. My best guess is that the Loader is no longer necessary if you first use the Starter - IF you can assume that the bullet, once started correctly, will stay centered. Since I already have the Loader (and the Cleaner) I'll continue to use it even with the Starter.

I got the loader to go on my ramrod but would think the regular Spin-Jag you mention would be just fine. I almost got the regular jag too but, since my Range Rod rotates, I figured, I didn't need both.

Sag-You and the rest of this board is starting to cost me alot of money! Rangeball- I'm going to go with the old style spinjag, the one with the knurled end. Once the bullet is started I would think all you need is a pusher! The old style looks like it would be nice as a jag too!

Here's my $3 short starter. I lost my original one the first day out this year and had to get another one pronto. I had a broken brass jag so I epoxied it into the PVC fittings. It works better than the factory model as a short starter on one end, and with the ramrod on the other. I tie it around my neck using the eye screw. Zen
