I WENT OUT TODAY AFTER TAKING EVERYONES ADVICE. I'LL START AT THE BEGINNING. IT'S A 10ML-II STAINLESS WITH SYNTHETIC STOCK. A FRIEND GAVE ME A ILLUMINATED 3X9 BSA SCOPE. I HAD THE LEOPOLD BASE AND RINGS. I HAD SHOT ABOUT 20 TIMES A FEW DAYS AGO WITH MIXED RESULTS. EVERYTHING FROM .5 MOA TO 5 INCH GROUPS AT 100 YRD. OFF A BENCH WITH BAGS.
I PATCHED IT OUT WITH HOPPIES #9 UNTIL CLEAN AND THEN DRY PATCHES. FIRED 3 PRIMERS THE CLEAR HER THROAT AND DROPPED IN 42 GR. 5744 MMP ORANGE SABOT AND BO 300 GR. FIRST SHOT 1633 FPS 3 INCHES HIGH 2 IN. LEFT. I WAITED 10 MINUTES TRIED IT AGAIN. 3 IN. HIGH DEAD CENTER 1874 FPS. SHOT A THREE SHOT GROUP 1.25 SUBTRACT .458 = .792 CENTER TO CENTER. AVERAGE VELOCITY WAS 1870 FPS. SLOW I UNDERSTAND BUT IT SHOT WELL. I MOVED TO ANOTHER TARGET FIRST SHOT DEAD CENTER 3 IN. HIGH, RIGHT WHERE IT'S SUP POST TO BE.
WAIT 10 MIN. 5 IN HIGH 3 IN LEFT. WAIT 10 MIN. 4 IN HIGH 2 IN RIGHT. I WALKED BACK FROM THE TARGET WONDERING WHY I WANTED ONE OF THESE THINGS. THEN I REMEMBERED I HAD BEEN TOLD TO DRY PATCH BETWEEN SHOTS SINCE 5744 IS SO DIRTY. RAN TWO PATCHES DOWN AND BACK ON BOTH SIDES = 4 PASSES. LOTS OF CRAP CAME OUT. FIRED 2 MORE TIMES AT THE SAME TARGET PATCHING BETWEEN SHOTS AND HAD A 3 SHOT GROUP .90 OUTSIDE TO OUTSIDE SUBTRACT .458 = .442 CENTER TO CENTER. I'LL TAKE THAT. ESPECIALLY SHOOTING OFF BAGS ON A 97 DODGE DAKOTA.
I HAD SOME 2015 I GAVE IT A TRY 2170 FPS TWO IN. LEFT AND POINT OF AIM. POINT OF IMPACT FOR HIGHT. I SHOT TWO OF THOSE. WENT BACK TO THE 5744 SAME LOAD, 5 IN GROUPS. I WAITED TEN MIN. BETWEEN ALL SHOTS AND DRY PATCHED EVERY TIME. I PATCHED HER OUT WITH HOPPIES UNTIL CLEAN, DRIED HER OUT AND TRIED AGAIN. FIRST SHOT TWO IN. LEFT, NEXT TWO DEAD CENTER 3 IN HIGH. I QUICK PUT HER IN THE CASE BEFORE SHE HAD A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED.
I KNOW THERE IS MORE VELOCITY TO BE HAD BUT THIS IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR NOW WE HAVE A LATE DOE SEASON IN IOWA THIS MONTH I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO. AS I SAT THERE WAITING BETWEEN SHOTS I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY WHEN I ORDERED THE GUN I WOULDN'T SPEND THE $50.00 MORE FOR A LAMINATED STOCK. BUT WITHOUT HESITATION I DROPPED $57.00 FOR 50 BO BULLETS, THAT ARE NOW NEAR GONE.
ALSO I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH FAITH IN THE BSA SCOPE, BUT I NOTICED THAT I COULD SEE THE .22 HOLES I HAD BEEN MAKING WITH THE AR15. AND I THINK IT WAS CLEARER THAT THE NIKON ON THE AR.

If you can get it, try some IMR SR 4759 or Vihta Vouri N-110. They're both factory powders, and IMO, are better choices than 5744 (both are cleaner, and produce more velocity). You shouldn't have a problem getting an accurate load without having to dry patch. Shoot, one of the main reasons I bought a Savage was so I wouldn't have to patch between shots.
Also, Vihta Vuori N-120 is a popular combo with the Barnes Originals that you have. Randy Wakeman recommends starting at 57 grains minimum, and not exceeding 62 grains. I shoot 60 in my gun.
And, last but not least, you might try those Barnes Originals with the Harvestor Black Crush Rib sabot. My gun prefers the orange sabots that you have, but I seem to be in the minority. I'd recommend to anyone to try both sabots to see which your gun prefers.

The 5744 sits on my shelf and has since season one, its probably the dirtiest powder I have shot. The cleanest powders are Vihta Vuori by my experience, but in my gun anything over 58 grn-120 accuracy went south and 58 grn didnt produce the speed I wanted. H-4198 or RL-7 65-69 grn seems to work well with bos with good accuracy and speed, have tried both but 4198 produced tighter groups in my gun.
if your barrel is like most the crush ribs might be a better fit, my barrel is very tight and I have to shoot the orange mmp, Bill

I DON'T PLAN TO LEAVE IT ON, BUT POOR PEOPLE HAVE POOR WAYS. ALL I WANT THE SAVAGE TO DO IS SHOOT 1.5 MOA OR BETTER, ALL THE TIME WITHOUT HAVING TO JUMP THREW A BUNCH OF HOOPS TO DO IT. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SIGHT IT IN AND SHOOT DEER. I DON'T WANT TO THINK, JUST SHOOT STUFF, AN EAT IT.

I bought a BSA for my slug gun several years back. They advertise them as being up to the recoil. It was the 1.5x4.5x32 cat's eye with IR. Sighted the gun in, all seemed well, only about 20 shots on the scope. Opening day, no shots. Got in my stand the second morning, when it got light enough, I looked through my scope to make sure I had the IR on the right setting, the crosshairs were no longer horizontal and vertical. The more I moved the gun, the more they moved. I finished the season with an open sighted 870. When I emailed BSA to find out about warranty work, they responded they don't recommend any of their scopes for shotguns with slugs, even though their website says they do I got them to trade the scope for a sweet .22 that is on my savage .22 and works great on it. I know most here will recommend much more expensive scopes, and probably justifiably so, but if you need to keep the price down look at the bushnell banner and trophy lines. $70-$80, clear glass and Bushnell told me they test them on the .375 H&H and they are more than adequate for recoil, according to them. If you can swing it, one of these may serve you well and you could put the bsa on a .22 before it crashes and burns.

There are some lower end scopes that are interesting. The Bushnell Banner and Trophy lines are pretty popular as Rangeball posted. The Konus KonusPro series and the Barska Euro-30, Huntmaster and Ridgeline series are also picking up with the budget minded crowd. There is even the Russian Yukon scopes. All of these scopes carry a lifetime warranty with a USA address. Most of us wouldn't trust a $100 scope but for those with a bit of Scottish blood they are worth a look. As far as reviews I take them with a grain of salt, it is easy to install a scope on a .22 but with a hard recoiler it has to be right. If it comes loose it's toast from getting slammed. If it is binding in the rings it's toast (maybe not toast but your zero is going to bounce all over).

161, another bad thing about 5744 is that it's got a well earned reputation of being tough on ventliners. Really, other than availability, I don't know why anyone shoots the stuff.

Hey Cedar, I am about 20 miles east of Iowa City. I took the gun apart last night. Cleaned it put a new vent liner in. Took the scope off and put my old K4 Weaver on. I had some Harvester sabots and some Remington 300 .457 JHP. Also 3/4 can of 2015. I alcohol patched after every shot and I never had a loss of accuracy over 27 shots. Only one flier and that was me. Only one group over 2 in. @ 100 yards off the hood of my pickup with bags, a couple under 1 in. I'm very happy. I would like to try some N120. I tried at the gun show in Cedar Rapids last night but didn't find any.
I did have one mishap I loaded the same charge of 2015 with a 300 gr. XTP when I pulled the trigger all I got was a pop. Did it three more times pushing the bullet back every time. Never did get it to go. After I cleared it I loaded the Remington and all was fine. Is this because the XTP is a .452 and with the Harvester black sabot there was not enough pressure to ignite the 2015?

I'm a poor one to get advice from. But my best luck with a b.o. has been with the black crush rib. And my best luck with .452 has been with the red crush rib. I have shot the short mmp with .452 bullets but not as well in my gun as the rcr.

With some guns the .457/8 remingtons can be used with the plane black short harvester sabots, some others prefer the crush rib or orange mmp's for this size bullet. These sabots are smaller in dia. than the mmp short black which work better with the .452 bullets like the xtps. Your gun didn't go off because there wasn't enough back pressure for the smokeless powder.

I didn't know harvester made a plain black. I used the black crush rib. I'll get some of the red.
