Took this buck in Ohio with my SS ML2 laminate stock, Zeis Conquest 3x9x40. Thanks to Richard's recent sharing of Duplexing with H4198, I am using 10gr 4759 under 55gr H4198. Barnes 245 gr Spitfire with supplied yellow sabot. 145 yards hit high behind left shoulder and took out the top of both lungs. Deer ran 40 yards before going down. My friend and I have been chasing this deer all season. At least we thought it was this deer, as there was 10 point with this guy with almost same size body, we could have been seeing both deer but thought there was only one big one. At least I think it was a 10 point, as I thought this one was a 10 until I got my hands on him and saw that he was a typical 12. ;D Thanks to all on this site that have helped both me and my buddy in developing accurate loads for our guns. I also have a black composite blue barrel ML2 pre accutrigger model that I shoot with 65gr H4198, behind barnes original with harvester black crush rib.

Congratulations Pointman, and I mean that from my heart as one hunter to another. Nothing does my heart better than seeing a big buck taken by a deserving hunter.
Could you please if possable give as detailed as possable you opinion of the 245 grain Spitfires perfirmance on your buck.
What I wish to know is bottom line does what you observed when you gutted your buck clearly with out a doubt tell youn the 245 grain Spitfire performed as intended as far as opening up. In other words what did the organs that the Spitfire passed through looked like if you saw them.
I ask because I have 400+ of them and they average around .5" MOA in my 10ML-II.
Thanks, Arthur.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words.
Art338wm, I did not split the chest cavity open as I am getting a shoulder mount and have been told not to. The entry wound was actually hard to find, you can see it faintly in the first picture just behind shoulder. The exit wound was the size of a quarter. I examined the lungs after gutting and I hit the top of both lungs, the first lung it hit had a hole poked through it the size of the bullet, the second lung was a mess halfway up, just torn bloody pulp.
In my opinion the bullet worked well. The buck kicked and ran 40-50 yards, jumped a fence and piled up. Some blood and lung material at site of hit, small amount of blood where he ran, but I did hit him high so the chest cavity filled.
Hope this helps

AWESOME buck! Congratulations! art, those bullets are really no good at all. Pointman just got lucky he made a lung shot. I'll take those spitfires off your hands for $10 and pay the shipping. ;D Pointman, I got a doe last year with the 245gr Spitfire. Quartering away shot took out three ribs upon entrance, one rib on exit and broke a shoulder on exit......she STILL made it 50yds. Entrance and exit holes in hide were about what you described, even after going through that much bone. Was very pleased with the performance, but please don't tell art.

I guess it would serve no purpose then to tell you my 10ML-II shoots the 245grn Spitfires into nice little sub-moa groups when I use 75 grains of H-4198, and as fate would have it these useless on deer bullets have given me my smallest ever group while shooting my 10ML-II of slightly larger than .4" for a 100yrd 3-shot group. D-boone thanks for your more than gracious ;D offer to by my Spitfires, but I think I will be hanging on to them. Especially so since Harvester is going to start selling a sabot that is compatible with the Spitfire and TMZs BT design. I have well over 400 each of the Knight version of the Spitfires and TMZs. As many here at this site, I bought them on close out for $16 or $18 per box of thirty from Cabelas. Pointman thanks for you detailed reply to my question.

It has been my experience that you have had typical results with the Barnes X. I have found that it take more than one rib to start the expansion at 2500 fps or less. I wish I would have known my ML would shoot them well last time I saw a sale on them. I keep pretty close tabs on those I have left. No, I do not push them much faster than 2500 with my ML. I do have a 7mm and a 25 cal center fire that uses Barnes x and tsx bullets.
In the past year has anyone seen a decent sale on any bullets. It seems that the high metal prices this past year have made all the supply house act like a 10% reduction is a good deal.

So what is the general consensus on the 245 gr spitfire MZs? I used the TMZs this year and was impressed with everything except expansion. Are the MZ's known to expand more than the TMZ's or are they about the same?
