Got some bullet weight questions for deer that is. I read some posts that say they use 185 - 200 gr bullets & get pass throughs w/blood trails. The I see posts that say to use 300 gr bullets like BO's,Rem.'s or XTP's to give you more punch/bone crunch over a lighter 250 gr bullet which makes sense. It would seem that lighter bullets move faster and would fragment because of velocity or hitting a bone?? Am I missing somethin??

No, your not missing anything.........Lighter faster bullets will fragment easier. You have to remember that there are a lot of different theories shared by many shooters. If a particular bullet/load combination worked well for you and you got your deer? Than "Its a great load" If you lost the deer It stinks! Place the bullet in the right spot and enjoy the venison Richard

Weight isn't the only thing to consider. Bullet construction is just as important. A poorly constructed 250-300 gr bullet can fail if it must pass through heavy bone. An all copper a 40 cal. 195 grain barnes may make a complete pass through in the same situation. There's something to be said for sectional density and good construction.

I think I will start perscribing to the old axiom, (When it comes to bullet constrution). I would rather have it and not need it. Then to need it and not have it. That being said some .50 cal users perfer 250 gr. or >, just because they tend for the most to shoot better ie. bearing surface, sd, bc, thats why you see alot that shoot lighter projectiles go to .40's, and 45's/

It seems most light bullet, under 250 grains, are used in the 'smaller' bores. There is another factor in the .50 caliber and that is pressure. You gotta have it and it is easier to get with heavy bullets and long bearing surfaces.

As an avid reader of this forum I believe that the most popular bullet currently is the Barns original 300 grain for the Savage ML2 .50 Cal.
