Well, I finally decided to go with a .40 cal Pac-Nor barrel for my custom Rem 700ML project. It already has a longer bolt with a Savage primer holder from a ML-II. Pac-Nor is going to fit it for the Savage breach plug and add a barrel nut for easy changeability. I was originally going to have the barrel cut to 24" like the original barrel but maybe it should be a little longer for this caliber. I was also considering getting the muzzle counterbored for easy bullet alignment with sabotless bullets, Are there any problems with this feature?
Now I have to get a new scope!

:)black congrats on your .40 barrel.since you will only be shooting sabotless i think the recess will work nicely.i have a 24" barrel and have shot velocitys close to 2800fps.i'm not sure what your goals are but i think a 25" barrel with the recess would be nice not to long and heavy.goodluck

I have the factory recess on my Savage .50 and it shoots consistently well. I have a false muzzle on a .375 smokeless muzzleloading barrel with the recess. That is the only easy way I could load it sabotless. It was too early in shooting to tell on accuracy.

No pictures of the primer holder but it looks just like a Savage ML II bolt. I made the bolt out of a centerfire bolt and machined the locking lugs off and drilled the face out to accept a Savage primer holder and cross pin. Then milled the slot in the bolt body like the original 700ML bolt. Uses the Remington factory firing pin. This made the bolt long enough to get the breach plug seat well in front of the recoil lug for extra strength.

I will call Pac-Nor today, I'm going with a 26" SS super match 40 cal 1-16 twist with a recessed muzzle. Anyone have any tips for a load with either the SST or the Barnes?

Haven't used the 200 SST or the 195 Barnes yet, but the XTP 200s work great with 52gr of H322 (2380 fps) or a 7/63gr duplex of 4759 and Varget (2750 fps). Both are very accurate. I would suspect the SST and Barnes will be similar.

:)black 66grs of 2015 with a 200sst will give you right around 2750fps with very good accuracy(atleast in my gun).i found the barnes a pain to get to shoot in the .40 but my .45 will shoot them lights out.
