I lost my ramrod while deer hunting this year and had to find a replacement. I went to Scheel's and found one made by CVA for about $10. It was about a 3' solid fiberglass(?) rod that had an threaded brass insert on one end for whatever tip you wanted to put on. You just cut the rod to the length you need. I got to thinking and remembered something else that I'm thinking will work as well or better. Sportsman's Warehouse sells replacement tent pole kits. They are "Stansport" brand, come with four 25-1/2" long rods, are the 9mm diameter style and only cost $8. (Even though they say 9mm, they are actually .375 diameter (the same standard 3/8" diameter rod that came with the Savage!)) They are hollow with hole the size of a #21 drill bit (the recommended size for a 10-32 tap!!! ;D). Even though they're hollow, they are stiffer than the solid one I bought. I've tapped m planning to carry one along in my gun case. If I ever get too ambitious and break one I might try epoxying a 5/32" welding rod down the middle of it to make it even more sturdy. I plan to put an extra or two in my gun case just in case... Also the kit comes with ferrules and a shock cord for joining the rods when you use them for their intended purpose. I've used a couple of sets before to use a shooting sticks. They come in pretty handy, are collapsible so you can use them whether sitting, kneeling or standing. And again, they are a LOT less expensive than the shooting sticks sold as such. Hope this is helpful for some of you.
