I went hunting New Years Day in the afternoon. The morning and the day before had been very windy and had anticipated a fair amount of early action. I waited around until a bit after sunset and saw zero deer so I decided to quickly check another spot before dark. As I walked down an abandoned railroad bed I saw a deer about 250 yards across a field coming from where I was headed. A little further on another and then another deer came out into a clearing. They stopped and looked in my direction but don't know if they saw me or were just looking for danger. The middle deer was the largest so I rested my rifle on a powerline tower that runs along the abandoned tracks, took my usual aim and I think that I squeezed the trigger. The three deer ran into the brush but I did not see them pass a tree that I used for a reference point. Since it was getting dark and I didn't have a flashlight I ran to the tree and made a short grid search and found the deer about 50 yards from where he had been standing. The End edge.

That is some pretty good shooting. I take your word that it is cervid and not caprine.

Since it kept going and wasted energy in the dirt past the deer I can't analyse the bullet for failure edge.

Since it kept going and wasted energy in the dirt past the deer I can't analyse the bullet for failure edge. Of course it failed: it wouldn't even let you look at it! In spite of the obvious bullet failure, the deer apparently died anyway, just like with those pitiful bullets: the 200SSTs. Congratulations.

Edge, if you had a picture of you holding that heart you would look like the guy out of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!

Edge nice shot and congrats on a late season harvest.
Looks like you got that bullet to strike at the heart of the matter.

Where is a pic of the deer? Is the heart all that was left? I think you just found a gut pile from another hunters kill and you brought the heart home! ;D
