Saturday I'm going to take my Savage ML 11 .50 cal barrel and action to a local gunsmith/machinist who has been recommended very highly. I'm going to have him cut 3" off the length of the barrel and take a look at re-tapering the barrel for weight purposes. He's says he's familiar with Savage ML 11 and seems to think some could be taken off the barrel by re-tapering and still retain its integrity. I would like to get some second opinions from any of you guys before I go. RB mentioned something earlier about a double taper. Any idea to what dimensions I could go with and still be safe with a high pressure load? I've skeletonized my laminate stock , ordered some Talley lightweight mounts& rings so this will be my last step in the process. Thanks much, Zen

Zen, by fluting a 28" pacnor it loses 11.2 oz or 0.4 oz per", thats leaving 1 1/2 " unfluted on each end. Im sure not all fluting falls into the same catagory depending on number of flutes, depth ,etc but this will give you a good idea of whats likely.......Bill

Thanks much, Zen The barrels I've double tapered are 45 and 40 caliber. They shoot higher pressure than the 50 but at the same time have more steel in the barrel compared to the bore. Most barrel makers suggest a minimum dimension for a given caliber and if I were to be set on a caliber I'd not go less than that diameter. For the 10 ML I would say you are limited to the size of the barrel one inch from the muzzle. Then you can taper back that dimension. However you should NOT go back any futher than the fore end of the stock. The closer to the breech plug the more pressure the barrel has to take by not going back past the fore end you still have the most metal in the highest pressure area.
