Got a jst curious question. I see and hear lots of guns were original browned. Now I a nice hammer that was never intentional browned but over the course of a few years has aquired a very nice browning job. My question: Is it possible many guns were left in the white and then browned all by themselves? Packdog

Most of the flintlock/percussion guns were left in the white. A new gun was supposed to look new, just like a new car should look new. Rubbing them down with a greased piece of leather & exposure to the weather was a daily routine & will patina them nicely & build a seasoning on the outside of the rifle similar to seasoning the barrel inside, as was required at the time.
It was not to keep it from rusting or to make it shoot better, it was the Only was to make the barrel last, as otherwise it would rust so bad it would be useless in a very short period of time.
I have a book that notes of only one order of millitary rifles being ordered Browned and I think that was in the late 1800's but I will try to find it & verify same.

That guy with the new Edwards rifle I was telling you about, told me that Edwards leaves his barrels outside in the weather (rain) to achieve a subtle modeled or splotchy brown finish. I think the idea is to keep the gun from rusting before browning was invented???

I know this will sound absurd to some but the old southern mountain gunmakers had a very unique way it is called urin browning. They would prop the barrels up on the outside of the back of the shop and request that if you had to relieve your self to do it on the iron.
