Chris, You mentioned having Brownells sight base files. Do you have the 60 or 65 degree files? Are you able to cut a dovetail where the lug will fit without knocking the edge off? Packdog

It's the 60 degree one...I think mine are the medium cut (who needs a finely filed dovetail?) I've been raising the dovetails with a cold chisel as well, so the file does not make my final shape anyway. (except with front sights that hang over the front and back of the base). I ALWAYS have to knock the sharp corner off the tenon (or sight), and even slightly file on the bottom of the tenon so that it is not perfectly flat, but SLIGHTLY convex, since there is no way I can file the bottom of the dovetail in the barrel perfectly flat. I want that sucker touchin' everywhere! I also taper them slightly (not so much that it looks bad) so they're always getting tighter, and always install them from the sideplate side, so that when I install my pins, if they're a bit tight, they won't drive out the tenons (if that makes sense). I have even lead soldered them into their dovetails, just to make sure them suckers is tight!!! Especially if I end up making one just slightly too loose! They won't come out then!!!
