Just got back from a week of fishing in Canada. Besides our boat catching 257 Walleyes there were other very neat things that happened up there....and one scary thing.
12 of us put in $20 bucks each for the biggest Walleye. Winner was 24 1/4 inch. Didn't weigh it...probably 5 lbs. We rarely catch any fish bigger then this. Someone in another camp brought in a 28 inch 9 pounder on the last day. HOG!
Our boat got a shock from lightning before we could get ashore. Apparently it came up thru some lead core line and into the guy holding the rod...not mine.
Another guy reeling in a small Walleye had a huge northern pike grab the fish and hang on just before he could net it. We've caught 2 Pike over 20 pounds up there since 1998 and he was all of that. The walleye was in ribbons.
Another guy brough up a 12 pound pike that yorked up a bunck of duck feathers in the net.
Watched a bald eagle swoop, and almost connect, on a momma duck and a bunch of little ones. Saw other eagles too.
Our group saw a total of 6 moose. 4 in Lavernde park...3 IN THE HIGHWAY (mom and 2 calfs that were bigger then whitetails.....close call. 2 on the penetration road into Gouin....from the west side. Camp Hibou.
Saw countless large hares on the gravel road...probably snowshoes. Also saw my first ever Spruce Grouse...very pretty. Lots of Ruffed Grouse that do not get out of the road....with very tiny chicks in tow....usually just one or two. Had to stop twice and shush them into the woods.
What else? Found a licence someone lost in 2001. Just wrote the guy a letter this morning. Googled his name to make sure his address was still the same. Maybe I'll hear from him.
Great trip. 17 hour drive yesterday to get home. Gouin is about 11 hours by road north of Ottawa. It's our 10th year going there. Awesome fishery!
