couldn'tit out to the range yesterday with Rifleman and Tar12. I wasn't able to get very good results out of my muzzle loader, but I got some pretty good results out of my AR15. I had been shooting a 40gr Vmax for a couple of years and decide to move up to the 50gr Vmax for the higher B.C. I had done some preliminary work with the load before, and had good results in the 27.0gr~27.6gr range. So this trip I took 10 rounds of each and shot two 5 shot groups of each charge. Both groups were fired at the same bull from 300 yards. Below are the results.
Criteria:
Rifle: AR Flat Top 01
Date: 09/06/08
Temp: 75 degrees
Wind: Calm
Benched, loaded one at a time.
Bullet: 50gr V-Max w/molly
Brass: Misc Winchester
COAL: 2.892"
Powder: N530
Range: 300yds
Charge Group Notes
27.2 2.6" Two 5 shot groups 8/10 rounds in 2.6"
27.4 0.75" Two 5 shot groups 8/10 rounds in 1.6" 6/10 rounds in 0.45"
27.6 2.12" Two 5 shot groups 7/11 rounds in 2" One blown primer
Comments - Forgot the tripod, so I couldn’t use my chronograph today. Loads are around 3600fps based on previous load testing. Mirage was very bad. 2 groups per bull. First group has tick marks, second has circles. Groups were fired about 20min apart. The mirage was bad enough that my hold could have been off as much as 1/2" from shot to shot. Started with a clean barrel. Prepped with Molly bore paste from Midway. First group was 6 rounds of 27.6gr. First 4 shots were everywhere, after that the barrel settled down. I should have loaded up 5 or 10 rounds of molly coated junk rounds to bring the barrel back in. Groups are centered left to right, and 1.5"~2" low at 300yds. Last range session with this bullet produced 5 shots in .75" @ 300yds with a 27.3gr charge. 27.3gr ~ 27.5gr seems to produce great accuracy, ½ MOA or less. I should see how these loads shoot using sorted match brass instead of the Winchester brass that I've picked up at the range.
