Yesterday was the first day of our rifle season. Friday night put the camo away, and stood in my gun room scratching my chin. What to take. Aw heck, I'll take the big stick . Out came the 300 WSM.
Grabbed my blaze orange jacket and an orange hat. Went through the pockets and there was a pair of heavy gloves and a grunt call. Won't need those gloves. Put a couple of strips of hand loads in my pocket and set everything out for the next morning.
Yesterday morning got into my blind 1/2 hour early. Got everything squared away and poured myself a cup of hot coffee. Sat there in the dark sipping coffee and listening to all the cars and trucks drive by. Lots of hunters were going out to the community pasture. At legal shooting time I saw a deer and immediately recognized it as a mulie. The white rump is unmistakable. It was a big deer at about 200 yds but in the low light couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe and still haven't earned my buck tag. It stepped into a thin line of trees. 5 minutes later I saw it moving in the trees so it hadn't gone the other way. 10 minutes later it stepped out 90 yds from me. It had it's head down grazing and a small hill blocked my view. I watched through the binos and it lifted it's head. Buck , and a fairly good one. Oh well.
Lots of shooting going on in the distance but that's all I saw. The usual whitetail parade never happened today and that big whitetail buck I have seen a few times never showed(I was ready for him . My hunting partner never saw anything all morning.
The lack of deer is unusual. Last saturday there was a large grass fire that burned on the military land and stopped at a fire guard next to this property may have had an effect on deer movements.
