Why can't some people shoot?!?!? I've got to vent a little here. Went bow hunting this weekend. After sitting all morning, we all met back at the truck. One of the guys (Jeff) needed to get his Encore ML sighted in. He had bought it off of his brother, and it has been shooting 150gr of 777 pellets, and he wanted to back it off a little bit. No big deal right? Well, dad wanted to shoot his Encore one more time before season also. So Jeff went to the front of the farm and set up where they normally shoot. Dad and I went back to the house to get his rifle, and went back to the farm. When we got there, Jeff had about 5 shots left of a pack of Barns TMZ bullets, and he had only hit a 12" target twice from 50 yards. Dad started setting up, and I started "helping" Jeff. He was doing the one shot then adjust technique. I don't normally recommend this method to ANYONE, but I figured from 50 yards it should get him close enough to hit that 12 inch target. He was chasing the shots everywhere. First he would be 12 inches high and right. Then 8 inches left. Then 6 inches low. Finally he was out of bullets. I told him that I was afraid his scope (Pentax) might be shot. He had 3 250gr SW bullets so I had him shoot them for group. Once again, he was everywhere. First two were dead on the windage, but one hit 6" high, and the other was 6" low. The third shot was about 2 FEET out at 2 o-clock. He had been shooting 100gr of Pyrodex pellets. Now he was out. So we cleaned the gun up, and got a new box of 250gr SW out of dads truck. Dad was done at this point, so I had him start measuring out loose FFFg T7 loads at 90 grains (by weight). Jeff shot a couple more times. I made him stop and spit patch the barrel between shots. His accuracy was still everywhere. So he says "why don't you shoot it." I was thinking "man, with groups like this, I'm afraid to touch the gun," but I agreed to shoot a few anyway. I spit patched the bore, and had Jeff load the gun. Well, this time he grabs the 250gr SW and opens up a bag of my MMP short black sabots not realizing that he was changing things again. I put a shot 6" out at high noon. I adjust the scope down 8 clicks, spit patch the bore, and have him load another round. This time I notice what he's using, and I make SURE that's what he used last time. It was so I shot again. This time I'm 3" out at high noon. Don't ask why 6 clicks moved me 3 inches at 50 yards. It's a Pentax. What can I say. Anyway, 4 more clicks and one more shot and I'm 1.5" high, 1/2" left at 50yds. He wants to know what it does at 100 yds, so I had him put a target up. I spit patched the bore, and loaded the gun. When he got back, the target was probably 120 yards out. I didn't say a word. Put the shot at 3" at 11:00. I said "Jeff, the gun and scope are fine."
So now he has a very detailed grocery list of things to go get for opening day, and we know his gun will shoot. Bad thing is that we know he can't..... When it comes to deer hunting, this guy is bar none, the luckiest guy I have ever met which means Dad and I may be in for a lot of tracking this year....
