To make a long story short, I'm going back to #11 percussion caps on my Knight MK85. The newer breech plug has a socket end and allows the breach to be removed with the nipple intact. The difference I've noticed between the two are: the #11 breech has a hole the entire length the same size as the nipple opening, allowing for powder to go into the breech and up against the bottom of the nipple when loaded. The 209 breech is necked down to a small opening at the muzzle end of the plug. The flame from the 209 fires into this inch long "chamber" and ignites the powder on the other side of the necked down portion.
It seems to me this 209 blasting through to the small opening is a poor method to ignite the blackpowder versus having a #11 cap ignite the powder that's sitting right up against the bottom of the nipple. Not sure if this has been discussed before or not but I was wondering if this 209 breech configuration has anything to do with the accuracy issues with the suspected higher pressure prematurely dislodging the sabot prior to the powder being burnt? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
