Is Van Wert Co. the only place in Ohio that this seems to be the only way to hunt? The last week was the start of slug gun season and we seem to have the lazyest hunters in the world. My son's and myself have been shot at, and run off the road by road hunters driving in reverse on the highway. 4 times the deer were coming into our woods and they were cut off and shot at from the road. Oh yes we have a D.N.R. person, he stopped us to check out OUR license. My brother was killed by a worthless hunter, so you know we hunt right. Is this a problem any where else? Sox

Personally I have not seen it lately but the previous place I was hunting, we had trouble with trespassers and road hunters. One time they gutshot a buck from the road with a bow or xbow, they gave up on the track quickly since it was a bad hit, the buck ran down and bedded approx. a 100yds from my buddy. He had to finish off their mess when he got down from the tree and the buck was too weak to get up from the wound and the thrashing it took from a mature ten point. Sorry about your brother.

I have a 30 year old first time deer hunter son hunting this year. The way he is talking this might just be his last because of what he has seen this week. I hope they don't win. Sox

Stopping road hunting is relatively safe and easy. Post yourself about 300 yards from the road they are using and carefully aim for the back tires with a rifle that is accurate and has distance capabilities. I suggest that you be careful not to hit the driver of the person riding shotgun. Usually two encounters in the same area is sufficient to stop road hunting. sox, they only win if you surrender. The radiator is another reasonable target for those who don't get the message quickly.

sox, that's the worst that I've heard of. Here, to get rid of the intruders 1.) I called the state police once, and they dont want to make arrests, but it put some scare into them, then 2.) Every time I was mad I fired high powered rifles to sight in or whatever and let them know that I was around, etc, and 3.) the day before opening day when all the city hunters were looking for where to hunt the next day on the opener, I have a sidearm on my belt, not overly pushy, but just making the point. They find easier pickings. Also keep in touch with your neighbors so you get the drift on what's going on- change of owners, what people's attitudes are etc. Sorry for you bad experiences, hunting can be a fine sport! Pete

It's bad down around the cabin in Lawerance county SE Ohio. We found 5 deer within a mile of the cabin dead in the field with the backstraps cut out and the rest left for the coyotes. And that was the spotlighters before opening day. Then you got the road hunters that just drive around and pop one in the field and run out and get it and then throw it in the back of the truck. One farmer has the idea, he is planting pine trees between the road and the fields on his property. It is starting to pay off, they don't get the easy shot.

We have a youth hunt 1 week before regular slug season in Ohio. You would think that was a good idea. Guess what that is when you see the most road hunters. I went past our woods we hunt and there were 6 trucks around the woods and over 18 people and 3 kids. That is the lesson for the next generation of heater hunters.Called land owner all were gone when he got there. Sox

Sox when you are very sure that a parked truck is tresspassing, get ok from landowner in advance & key your nearest towing wrecker service in your cell phone. its fun not assisting a tresspasser in finding his veh& watching those hunt for their veh & it will cost to get it out of the wrecker yard! never had one return! ;D ;D ;D
