I am going to attempt my first taxidermy mount, my son's 11 point, taken a couple of weeks ago. Son did not have the funds to have it mounted professionally. We have been waiting for a nice enough rack to do a shoulder mount.
Last year I purchased Bill Atkins DVD set on taxidermy. I have watched the white tail deer DVD several times and have acquired the necessary mannequin and supplies. I also read TenBears tutorial. Looking for all the information I could find.
I practiced skinning a doe first before I started the 11 point. On the buck, I started with the "Y" from antler bases and down the back of the neck for about 6 to 7 inches.
It took me approximately 1 1/2 hours to finish skinning the face. I would stop momentarily to view the DVD portion of the skinning on several occasions.
After the skinning I took the hide and double bagged it for the freezer until I have time for the fleshing process.
Next the antlers and portion of the skull were removed from the head. I used a sawsall for this purpose.
A few days later I received the mannequin. I test fit the antlers in the slot of the mannequin. I had left too much skull with the antlers. Better too much than not enough I guess. I recut the skull to fit the mannequin.
I have forgotten to mention that I took the proper measurements needed before ordering the mannequin.
So far, so good in my taxidermy endeavor.
I will post a picture of my finished mount.
