I was employed as a security guard at our local bank because it had been robbed and hiring a security guard was cheaper than paying the increased insurance.
One day a young man came into the bank and after doing some business asked if they knew of anyone who would buy a good squirrel dog. It was pointed out that I kept a few dogs and might be interested. The man came to me and said he needed money and had a good squirrel dog he needed to sell. "Tell me about it." I answered. He described the dog as being female, half Black and Tan hound and half German Shepherd that looked more shepherd than anything. He told me that he had over three hundred squirrel in his freezer and that the dog would tree squirrel as fast as you could walk to her. He told me that the instant you took a squirrel from her she left in a dead run and often treed again by the time you got the last one on a stringer.
It was sounding a little to good to be true and when he offered her for $35.00 I asked if I could try her out before agreeing to buy. Certainly, he agreed. He lived about thirty miles south of me but the next day he showed up at the bank with the dog. It was a medium sized brown dog that appeared well cared for and was friendly. I was told that I needed to have a leash with me and tie her when I wanted to leave the woods. Otherwise she would dash away and have another squirrel treed. I am thinking that I was with a professional dog trader. He told me to try her out a few days and he would stop by for the money or the dog. I agreed.
The following day I decided to try her out after getting off at 3:00 PM. I put her in my Pickup and went to a country gravel road surrounded by woods. I unsnapped the leash and she left down the road in a dead run. I stood and wondered if I would ever see this nut again.
At a distance of about 100 yards she hit the woods and begin barking treed. I walked down there expecting little but seen a grey squirrel sitting near the top of a redoak. I shot it out and walked to take the squirrel from her. The instant I got the squirrel she was again racing through the woods as she was after something by sight. She was treed again before I had time to guess what was going on. I walked down hill to her and this time it was a fox squirrel I shot out. I had seen all I needed to see and witnessed more than I had ever seen before in a dog. I put a leash on her and brought her to my dog pen. I gladly gave the man his money and considered myself the owner of the worlds best squirrel dog.
We kept her a year and found that hunting squirrel with her was little fun and constant walking from tree to tree.
A man from southernArkansas came by looking for a squirrel dog for a farmer friend of his. He came to me and I told him that I had the worlds best but it would not come cheap. My five hundered price was more than he thought the farmer would pay so he tried out several dogs. He came back with a proprosition for me. "Ben I will write you a check for $500. if you will hold it until the farmer tries the dog out. I agreed and he left with Magic. Two days later he called me and told me that they had tried the dog out.
We walked around the edge of a field for about an hour and got seven squirrel and one coon. Cash the check this dog has found a permanent home. I have hunted many dogs but Magic was the most effecient, fastest surest squirrel dog I have seen work. I don't expect readers to believe all this. I wouldn't if I had never followed Magic. Ozark
