I have just bought a Savage ML-S/S Laminate after reading and thinkin about it. My question: Is there a breech plug remover other than the ez tool? What I want is a brrech plug head that can fit onto the end of a socket. I can't find such an animal, only occasional mention of it. Can anybody help? Thanks--Mark

I took a 12 MM craftsman 1/4 inch drive socket and worked it over with a dremel to fit into the slot on the breech plug. Put this on a universal and with a 6 inch extension you can get the breech plug out without removing the bolt. Tomorrow I will take some pics of what I have and post them.

OK here are a couple of pics of what I use. This was done after seeing the Jolop tool but those pics have dissapeared from the link. I also see that it was actually a 12 mm 6 point socket that I started with. Hope these help. Any questions just ask.

minst7877,
What are your thoughts on a 12mm deep socket with 1/4" socket wrench. I know Sears sells both of these. I am not sure what the depth is on a 12mm deep socket - maybe 2"? I am not sure either if the 1/4" socket will fit in the chamber either? Do you happen to know the approximate depth of POCAMPO EZ TOOL? Did you use your Dremel to do all the cutting on the socket or just to grind off the edges?
Maybe you already thought this over, I was just wondering.

The head of the ratchet will not fit down into the breech area of the gun. The short length socket with the universal allows enough room to totally unscrew the plug take out the tool, tip up the gun and remove the plug as it slides back into the breech. I did all the work on the socket with my dremel and a cutoff wheel. I don't know anything about the Pocampo tool so I can't answer that. They both do the same job in removing the breech plug without removing the bolt from the gun.

DC,
I dremeled my 12mm socket today and got her to fit the groves in the rear of the breech plug--great idea! My questions is: Does the universal with extension give you enough angle to turn the breech plug-as my universal only has about a 60 degree angle-90 would be great but can't find one. I had to work 2nd shift and will work on it more tomorrow. Thanks-Mark

You don't need to come straight out from the side of the receiver. I will try to get another pic today to show how mine looks when I am removing the plug. DC

Here are some pics of the tool in use. This first one shows the tool inserted and engaged on the breech plug. This one is with the breech plug totally backed out of the threads. This one is after tipping the barrel up, the plug has slid to the rear and can be picked up and removed. Hope these help. DC

DC,
Apparently your universal is the same as mine-angle 60 deg. I am using a 3/8" drive socket which is what yours looks to be. A smaller drive would have a ore narrow extension for clearance. I can try both. At any rate-thanks much for the pics and help. This is what I needed.--Mark

I used the arbor that holds an abrasive wheel to do mine. Put the socket in a bench vise so it couldn't move and away I went.

Did you shorten the socket before cutting the ears in?

I just got the socket parts today. When I get my gun (which is on order), I will have to modify the socket at that time so I can get it to fit properly.
Great post and thanks for your help and idea!

The total length of the socket with the ears is just how I bought it. I can't take credit for this as I made it from the pics that were posted of Jolops tool. Those pics have since dissapeared from the link in tips and hints.
