Got one at an auction, called TC about details. It's a 1:38 and the tech guy said start with 370 maxi ball and 80 or 90 of powder and go from there. He was not keen on the idea of sabots or balls. Any load recipes? I know there are lots of conicals to try, lots of powder to check out. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

I wonder how the tech guy knew it was a 1:38 twist. Did you give him the serial # off the gun? The reason I ask is because most WMC's in .50 caliber carried barrels with a 1 in 20 twist. I think they changed to the 1 in 38 just before they quit making them, so that means you may have a newer gun. I have two WMC's one flint and one caplock. They both "like" the 370-grain Maxi-Ball as well as several saboted bullets. BUT why use something which is harder to load when the Maxi-Ball will do as well? BTW The Flintlock shoots the Maxi real well with 85 grains of FFG and the caplock seems to do better accuracy wise with only 80 grains of the same powder.

I gave him the serial number 32784 and he said it was 1:38. I even brought up the 1:20 twist rifles, and I told him that my understanding was that the 1:38 had the QLA muzzle and mine didn't. He still said it was 1:38 so I'll go with that. He was a good guy, going to send me the manuals and some paper about the peep sight I have. I think I'll work up from 65 of powder and a lighter conical and see what works. Thanks for the reply.

One other thing. Does your WMC have the updated tang? If it is the updated one the front tang screw will be a machine threaded screw which goes all the way through the stock and into the trigger guard. If it is the older version the front tang screw will be a wood screw which only goes into the wood.
If your rifle is of the older version I'd see if T/C could still update the tang because both of mine was the older version and split their stocks in short order. I don't know if T/C could replace the stock now or not. The only chance would be if they still have some WMC stocks around or a Pa Hunter stock still there. They are both the same stock.

My daughter has killed 3 deer with her WMC using a .490 patched round ball and 70 grains of 3F Goex. All good clean kills. All under 50 yards. The rifle shoots this load under 2 inches at 50 yards.

Both of mine are the 1 in 20 twist. BUT before you use any hot loads with conical bullets in one you need to be sure the stock has the update done to it. If not chances are it will split the stock. You can be sure if the stock has the update by taking out the front tang screw and see if it is a machine screw which screws into the trigger guard. If both of the tang screws are wood screws then it has not been updated and needs to be done ASAP.

You are welcome. I would hate to see someone split one of those stocks on that fine gun and no way to get it fixed. I understand they no longer have any replacement stocks left.
Both of mine split their stocks on the 7 or 8 th shot. I was using 85 grains of FFg with a 370-grain Maxi-Ball. The stocks both split just forward of the wrist under the lock mortise and all the way through to the other side where the lock bolt goes through the stock. Not good.

I had a wmc 1 to 20 twist with 20" barrel. Wouldn't shoot balls or sabots,shot max-balls good with 80 grs. prodex.

Im so glad to have found this post.
Ive got a used TC WMC that I have never shot and was planning on shooting it some this weekend to work on a load for next season..It is serial number 46322 and it has the two wood screws.
So what have i got to do?Send it back to TC?Do they do this free of charge.
Having never shot it,,I really love the feel and the balanance of this traditional muzzloader. It seems to fit quite good.
Anyone tried the drop in 58 cal or 62 smooth for it yet?
