Hi all~ I'm new to this site. My husband and I have an old, in great condition muzzleloader. A friend looked at it and said it had a curly barrel on it. Wood is short on the barrel, rod is wood in good condition, all of the metal is in good condition, has a double trigger I guess you say. We only found three words on the barrel and they say John Fry Ligonier. Can anyone tell me anything about this and or where I can find something on the internet to tell me what this might possiably be worth. Appreciate any help you can give this amateur. Thanks.

We believe it to be a .32 caliber not sure what else I can tell you all. I can send a picture if you email me as so you may get a better idea of what we have. I can also try to post the picture too.

Have never heard of a curly barrel, unless he was referring to a barrel from Curly Gostomski, in which case the rifle wouldn't be more than 40 years old. Did he perhaps say it had a curly stock? Curley maple was a variation of maple used to stock muzzleloaders, both old and new. Since this is apparently a signed rifle, if you write a detailed letter describing the rifle and the name on it and send it to Harry Hunter in care of Muzzleblasts Magazine PO Box 67 Friendship, Indiana, Harry may be able to tell you more about it. Harry writes a column for the magazine specializing in this area, and has access to an amazing amount of info on old guns and gunmakers.

robbijo, could that curly barrel been Damascus steel? Or maybe you meant a curly stock? Let us know.

Thanks for the help or what help you could give me. And yes it is a curly stock. I took some pictures of the gun and could email to someone if they'd want to look at it for a better perspective on it. Otherwise will look for the antique book and or mail Harry and see if he can identify this gun and how old and how much it might be worth. Thanks again guys. Again if you want to see it PM me with your email address and I'll get them out to you. Thanks again. RJ

Don't think I mentioned and may not matter but barrel is octigon shaped and looks like inside is too.

Where you say the barrel looks octagon on the inside to sounds like round bottom rifling. I'd like to see some pictures of said rifle. Email them to blair@naxs.net.
