Recently, I had been observing some discussions about whether original Wheellocks had an angled vent to protect the fragile pyrite from the blast. That was due to some pyrites literally being wrecked in the vent blast, Last week, I was talking with Leonard Day after putting in an order for a .62 Colonial Dutch Doglock (Helga) about Wheellocks. I had also mentioned the discussion about the vents being angled as well as a new domestic source for good pyrite from Horst and McCann. Leonard was intrigued and told me that he was going to check out two original Wheelocks that he has in his possesion and call me back. Tonight he did call me and said that the vents on the Italian and the French Wheellock pistols were indeed angled. The vent blast was directed to be forward and high of the pyrite. With this discovery Leonard told me that he is going to make all his Wheellocks to this configuration! That includes the the Arquebus he is building for me (Bertha). In addition Mr. Day told me that I could ship Sparky (.58 Wheellock) up to him and he will plug up the old vent and drill a new one. So you can guess that I'll be packing Sparky up and shipping her out next week! I'm really looking forward to shooting her next year now! New angled vent along with new pyrite, it ought to be fun! ;D
