ok ive just gone threw every post page and was looking for round ball shot placement preferance. ( or even maxi- ball) in a flinter. i want to know where you guys and gals prefer to hit your deer. shoulder to drop or keep it from running. or just behind for lung shot to save meat. or what ever is your choise. pros and cons of said shot .
ps. how many of you use a wonder wad behind a patch and ball?

I always went for the heart/lung shot-seemed the safest shot. my buddies felt the same way- though for about 5 yrs. running one has killed them with a hind or butt shot- he took lots of ribbing after the third time- the last couple years he has had straight on shots( the ball still made it to the rear!) but they all died quickly- faster than I would have thought.-his buck is the successful flinter post down a couple....-Getonit-

My RB shot placement preference in priority order: 1) Heart 2) Double lung 3) Neck vertebrate I use OxYoke wonderwads with all high power hunting loads

roundball are thoes prelubed? or do you lube them or use dry? what do you consider high "power load"? I buy prelubed OxYoke wonderwads...don't know of any way to make them at home given the lube injection process that they use. My round ball deer hunting loads are max or near max loads...ie: 90grns Goex 3F...I also use them under the occasional maxihunter I shoot from a .45cal every now and then. It's main purpose is a firewall to protect the patch from beginning to fail...with a wad, you can pick patches up off the ground and use them again. The wad also improves the gas seal in the bore, increasing velocity with the same powder charge as it reduces gas blowby. Oxyoke injects them with natural lube 1000 which is forced out from heat and pressure putting more lube in the bore...the injection is what keeps the surface from being a sticky mess...which is why nobody has been able to recreate a home made process to equal it that I know of. The good news is they're not needed with light/moderate target loads, just full power loads...so although they're pricey, I only use them to sight in a rifle, then an annual 'checkzero' before hunting season starts, and the occasional hunting shot...a bag or two will last quite a while.

With 180 PRB I like the behind the shoulder and I hate wasting meat.I don't load so hot that I need any thing other than a patched round ball .T/C Hawkens 90 gr. pyrodex w .495 dia.ball. Make patches out of matress ticking lubed in Bore butter ( used Krisco many years ago) But the Krisco draws to may flies

Center lungs. Less to do with saving meat than guaranteeing the ball exits and the lungs collapse. Deer drop very well with both lungs hit with a round ball. I'd rather miss the shoulder bone entirely.
With a flinter there's also a change of a slow fire and aiming in the center of the vitals is a bit of insurance should my aim drift.
