I was just given a hand me down TC white mountain 50 cal. carbine. it has a 1:20" barrel twist. Does anyone know what this barrel was designed to shoot? i have been using tc 320 maxi balls w/ 90 grains of goex ffg.as I didn't think the thing would do well w/a round ball.

Hi lukystif, You are correct about PRB's not shooting well out of that rifle. I had one (wish I still did) that shot maxi hunters and .429 xtp in green mmp sabot very, very well. I could hit whatever I wanted to with that gun. I harvested many squirrels by putting a 44 cal hole through thier head with it. I am looking for another one myself. It is a great hunting rifle. Now I would probably shoot a .451 xtp in a mmp black sabot in one. Palmer

Palmer is right on his recomendations- mine shoots the hornady 45xtp with the black sabot best- and the 429 with green sabots well too-never had that great of luck with the Maxi balls- wasnt near as accurate as saboted bullets. its gone to being a backup spare since buying the Savage MLII smokeless.....-Getonit-

lukystif They have advised you well. If you are wanting to shoot a rifle with a prb (patched round ball), then you need a rifling twist of 1:48 or slower. Any twist faster than this will be for conicals, slower twist are for patched balls.
One point of interest though. You might want to make sure it has been updated with the new tang bolt. It will actually screw down from the tang and screw into the trigger guard on the bottom of the rifle. If your rifle does not have this type of set up, call Thompson/Center. If you shoot moderate to heavy loads, you will find that your stock will break in the wrist around that tang. I've seen this happen to 2 White Mountains. Sent both back to Thompson and both were restocked and updated free of charge.

I have a 50 cal that shoots great w/prb with light loads. For example 35 gr. of 3f Goex. More accurate that I can shoot. Great for practice/plinking and economical too.
