I have what appears to be a very early Indian trades rifle that is of the Hawkins style. It has brass diamonds in the stock which is a half stock. The overall length of the rifle is 50 3/4 inches. The stock is 30" long It has a heavy octagon barrel with double set triggers. The bore mikes at 5/16th inch. The only identfying mark I have been able to find is a large N on the inside of the lock. Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle and what caliber it is? ;D

i dont know much about the riflr but if you measured the in side of the barel correctly then you take the 5 and divide by 16 and you hace .3125 or roughly a 32 cal. id guess.

I appreciate the info. I finally found my other caliper that measures in 10th of an inch and it reads .40 so I am assuming that it is a 40 caliber. I'll get some .395 ball and try it.

I finally got to shoot the old flinter yesterday. Ordered some .395 ball from Dixie, loaded it behind 80 grn's of FF and filled the flash pan with FFF and let her fly at a small sapling, cut the top right out of it at approx. 30 yds.Smelled like sewer gas for an hr. after that. FUN!!!!! ;D

It appears to be grouping well for about 30 yds which is the only distance I've shot so far, probably about a 2 in. group out of 6 rounds. I'm not sure of the patch thickness but I probably need it to be thinner. The round was really hard to push home. The first one was the hardest the rest went smoother. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting it and am going to experiment with different amounts of powder.

blackknee I too own a .40 caliber. I found that .395's are just too darn hard to seat, but if you go with a .390 and by using a .010 patch it will not be difficult to load at all and will make it easier to load.
