im askin yalls opinions for varmint guns like what would be good for long range accurany and depenability. can you all give some suggestions i have a few like the 260 22 hornet but give some more suggestions. thanks for the help well talk to you later.

Tough question to answer. I my area of Ohio, it is flat farm country, but there are houses on every corner in the country. Every country block is one mile square. Many varmint hunters use 22-250's and 220 Swift's. I personally use a 22 Hornet and a Rem. 222. It has performed at "my" limit of long range coupled with the houses and risk of a person being out there but unseen by the shooter. There are a lot of guys around here also in love with their HMR 17's.

Badger, if mainly huntin groundhogs and smaller stuff a 22-250 cant be beat. Larger such as wolves, big yotes etc. I would opt for a 243 Win. plus could second as a nice little deer gun. Lite recoil plus long range hitter. I bot a Savage 243 this spring and it is great on groundhogs too.

how far have you all been shhoin. im talking about 2 and 3 hundred yards and more. up here if you are close you might as well say bye bye to the varmint. i like taking them long shots. well talk to you later

Badger, I have only shot my 243 out to 200 yds so far. It is a fairly flat shooter and very accurate at that range. I know guys that do well past that range with the 243 or other 6 MM's. Actually I just sold my 6mm, when I got my 22 Hornet. I have that and the Rem.222 and have taken groundhogs easily past 200 yds. Sure the 6mm has also,but I just found that I never used the gun anymore once I had these guns. Furthest groundhog with the Hornet is 224 yds. The .222 only about another 20yds. further. I hadn't taken any that far with the 6mm. Not that it can't do it, I just enjoyed shooting these 2 guns more. I am sure I can shoot these two further, just never have. The limiting thing,gets to be the scope. Can't shoot what you can't see.

If you wanna a real long range varmint gun in a factory caliber with little headache, try a rem 700 hvy barrel in 25-06, It is a true 600 yard gun. But it is often too big for a lot of applications. I had a sweetie that was glassbedded and had a trigger job, the rest was factory. It would shoot under 2 inches at 300 yds day in day out. Shoulda kept it, but ..oh well I like my 1000 yard gun I got now ;D

Badger: A 220 Swift is a good groundhog gun & extremely accurate out ot 500 yards. They had a bad rap for years because they are so dang fast the barrels would burn up in 700 to 1000 rounds. Now with this new steel they put in barrel you can get 7000 + rounds out of one. And it is a fast & flat shooting rifle at 3500 to 3800 fps. Low recoil also in a varmint rifle, you can shoot it all day & it won't hurt ya. I seldom shoot over 200 yards anymore, but mine will cut 3 touching at 200 yards all day long & not just me shooting, others have done it also. But to me the cheapest rifle to shoot in a pretty accurate round is a 223. I had a Rem 700 Varmint rifle in a 223 with the laminated stock & out to 200 yards it would cut 3 in the same hole. You can buy the ammo cheap too if you don't want to load it (army surplus) and it is suprising how accurate some of it is. No recoil on this rifle either, and ideal for a young feller. You get too much rifle when ya are young & you will develope bad shooting habits trying to get away from the recoil... Don't matter how far it shoots or how accurate it is if ya can't handle the recoil, all is lost.....  |

 Sounds to me like you are hunting the wrong varmint..... You neen a good coyote call & a 200 yard rifle. Call them early morning & late evening... How close you get to them depends on the skill of the hunter... However, they are wuite wary & extra keen eyesight for movement even of the slightest & a keen nose too.

And I thought there were only two good varmint calibers....the .220 Swift and the .25-06 Remington. They are my pick of the litter for long range. For medium range the .22 Hornet gets my nod. Believe me it will take care of any coyote that walks all the way up to Cougar with a well placed hit (head shot).

yeah doug the 22 hornet is a hoss as far as power. ive shot one before and didnt drop abit. that was about 120 or 140 yards or so. well talk to you later. badger

The little 22 Hornet really surprised me. I bought a Browning 1885 this spring in this cal., but I was really looking for a little larger one. I reload for my guns, so right away I started working on loading. With Sierra 40gr. Blitzkings, I have got a best of .155, 3 shot grp., but .200 grps. are easy to do any day. Now, I head shoot my groundhogs and them bullets really do a number on them. I was hoping to find this Browning in a .223 or .22-250 , but I sure am not disappointed with the 22 Hornet at all. Where I live and what I shoot, this gun and the Rem. 222 does all I need at the range I can shoot at. Last year, I took a Coyote with the Rem. 222, shooting Sierra 50gr. Blitz bullets and it was ALL the gun I needed at just over 300yds. The Hornet has a Leupold 6x20x40 Vari-X111 AO, and the Rem. 222 has a Redfield 6X18X40 AO scope.

sounds pretty good to me. have you ever shot them at any larger distances. would a 30-30 be a good varmint gun. the one i shoot does a number on deer. it shoots great at about 140 yards. well talk to you later badger

30-30 though good deer guns, were not known to be extremely varmint type accurate. Now, I have never shot one, but I was always told that. Also the 30-30 is not a very fast round which also means it is not a very flat shooter. So you will not have the range that you are looking for in a varmint. Actually a 22 Win. mag would probably do as well, if not better for varmints as the 30-30. Now I do now they do make what is called Accelerator bullets for the 30-30 which is a sabot type of projectile, which allows the 30-30 to shoot a lighter bullet, but again the guys I have talked to were never impressed with the accuraccy. Now if you are still talking varmints, I would take the 22 Hornet over the 30-30. There are many cal. better for varmints than the 30-30.

Badger the 30-30 is not ideal, but when I was a teenager many moons ago I used a 30-30 and a 22lr as they were the only two rifles I owned, and you know what? I killed plenty of groundhogs with them both. Just be careful where you shoot especially with that 30-30 cause when it richochets, and it will, it carrys a long way.

I just had a conversation with my manager. He was telling me about his benchrest rifle he had built by a gentleman in PA. Mr Borden I belive. Anyway, He is pretty happy with it. He resides out in prarie dog country, so I can see the need for a peice like that.
