I have not seen much on coyote hunting here so I thought I would share some of my experience with these dirty dogs. First I am not a coyote hunter in the most common terms. I just shoot them when I am out deer hunting. I have seen them chasing deer more times then I can imagine and I do believe they catch and kill healthy and mature deer. Matter if fact I know it. Year ago I worked at a government installation where no hunting was allowed. I patrolled the place on all different shifts. I witnessed a mature buck cornered by 4 yotes and when I returned he was dead and being fed upon. I have seen them run deer and switch off lead dog just like wolves do, yes no doubt they catch and kill mature deer as well as fawns. I have killed several deer with my handguns, as that is what I hunted with for years. I was out one day and a doe came screaming by with something on her tail, yup it was a yote. Busted the yote at 35 yds with a 357 mag. Shot one at about 100 yds with the .357 another time. Was still hunting one day and shot a yote at about 40 yds in the rain, he was bedded down but I had the wind on him. 44 mag 180 gr jhp did the job. Another time I was set up on the opener deer season. Wsa really pumped over my location. 30 minutes into the season 2 doe came barreling past me and took off down a ravine, yup another yote was after them. He gave up and laid down on the opposite ridge of the ravine at about 70 yds. I watched him for 30 minutes, then decided I was not likely to see many deer with him in the area, so I got the 44's crosshairs on him and made a toot on my doe bleat. He stood up, and then he laid down forever. Last year on the opener I was using a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag with open sights on the opener. I saw 2 doe come out of the woods that was across from the patch I was sitting in. They were at high alert. I was looking for what had them spooked. I was sitting on the ground per my usual SOP. I heard some light steps in the leaves right behind me. I turned and looked around the tree I was resting my back on, and I don't know who was more surpised, me or the yote. He was off the my right rear. As he wheeled and ran, I swung my right gunhand around and poked the 44 out in front of him and shot dbl action. I drilled him !! He rolled down the hill dead as a doornail. I think where I live and hunt has a very high coyote population for me to get these kind of shots, but I am working on that. ;D

I am jealous! Your shooting ability and good fortune dropping them makes me envious! But, I am glad their are more in your neighborhood then mine and we have too many! I bust them every chance I get and that is not often enough and my aim is never as good as I would like.

Rifleman, great stories!! I really enjoy hearing about succesful yote hunts or kills during deer and turkey season. You must be a die hard pistol shooter or just naturally blessed because taking just one yote with a pistol is a challenge to most of us and you have taken a few with them. Keep whackin and stackin... I have taken two yotes so far. One was with my bow last yr in Ohio. He came in across a thin woodline dividing two fields. When he entered the woodlot i was in,he was just 12 yrds away. One shot to the mid section and he was off and running. He took off so fast that he ran smack dab into a tree. There was yote and arrow and leaves flying all over the place. He ran down the hill and into his den where i presume he died. Another time that is similiar to what you experienced, was in West Va two yrs ago. I sat down watching a long ridge with my back against a huge White Oak. I heard footsteps behind me coming down the hill and presumed it was a deer. I was afraid to move so as slowly as possible looked around the tree. To my surprise, there stood a yote at no more than 30 ft away!! I eased my .243 barrel around the tree and dropped him right there. Odd as it sounds,on both of those hunts i had deer come in after i killed the yote. The deer in Ohio was a good 8pt that walked the exact same path as the yote. I shot him at 12yrds.Shot a little high hitting him in the spine but luckily dropped him in his tracks. I dont think he had any fear of yotes whatsoever! Maybe he had been whoopin up on them in his 2.5 yrs of living.

I use a remington 180 gr JHP with a load of mil surplus h-108 powder, mv 1600 fps. Pretty much same load as remington has in a factory load, just easier on my wallet so I can shoot alot more.

Hey Rifleman your username needs to be Revolverman. Are you a student of Elmer Keith because you know how to make some good long shots with your revolver?
I've yet to take a yote with anything other than a rifle & that was last year during gun season. Had two yotes come walking under my deerstand & dropped the 1st one and didn't shoot at the second because he disappeared too fast after the shot. The yote was only 5 yards away from me and it went in between hisshoulders and exited with his stomach. He had mange and urine and crap all around him.
So I got on my Truetalker deer call and made a doe grunt. Within 15 minutes this 11 pointer with a drop tine walks within 10 yds. of the dead coyote and just stood there watching him. I pulled the trigger of my Colt Lite Rifle (30/06) and he was mine. Wished it had been with my .44 Ruger which I didn't have on me at the time.

With regards to my post on my longest shot with my handgun I hope that people realize that I am not bragging about my shooting, and that I am not pitting myself against others.
Our Lord has blessed us all with talents and knowledge that should be shared for the benefit of all rather than being hidden and eventually lost, as is the case with many skills today.

WHYOHE,
Where is Pa. is Swickley ? I live in Panama, N.Y. which is 3 miles from Bear Lake, Pa. and approx. 10 miles from Corry, Pa.
We are also experiencing a major problem with Coyotes.
When I first moved into the area we had so many deer that it looked like the National Guard on maneuvers. Opening day for gun season and Thanksgiving day always sounded like you were in the middle of a fire fight. This year-four shots opening day, two shots on Thanksgiving. A Lot of us locals put a lot of time into our deer hunting-we are not seeing any deer ! Lots of coyotes though. To make matters worse, I had a Red Wolf cross the road in front of me two weeks ago.
There was a packof Red Wolves placed in Allegheny National Forest, near Warren, Pa, without anyone supposedly knowing about it and they have made their way up to my area which is about 35-40 minutes from me. To top it off, a Cougar has been sighted repeatedly !
The largest winter yard herd sighted last winter was 6 deer. How many are going to left in the next year or two ? This is the worst I have seen since 1968 !!!!!!
As for these varmints, we see them-they get shot !

We have a infestation of coyotes here in Il. With all the high water, they(and everything else) are up on the high ground. We have been hitting them pretty hard, but never seem to thin them out much. There is a lot of yote hunters around here. Some use high power rifles, shotguns, handguns. Calling them in is a hoot. They think they are comming in for a easy meal(he he he) Wrong! If you get two or more comming in,they look back and forth at each other, like I'm getting there first. It's great giving them their last chow call. Ron S

Wyohe, I'm just south of you a bit, in Allegany Co., MD. I'm getting ready to start hammering 'em too. I saw 9 deer in 15 days of hunting, 5 on opening of rifle & the other 4 over 14 days. I think due to the amount of food, warm weather & those eaten by coyote & bear are the reason they are scarce in my neck of the woods. Good Luck!

Up here in WI. we can't shoot coyotes during deer season DNR is afraid that timber wolves might be shot. Now we have wolves instead. Their population just took off. Hope the mange comes. All our deer turned nocturnal They move very little. Red Club

Never shot anything out of season but have witnessed several lighting strikes!!!!!
