After much debate and wanting to get a good yote gun,i picked up a new Remington .223 VLS. Stainless,Heavy Barell,Laminate stock. I still need to pick up a good scope for it and start working up some loads also but i am fired up about yote hunting!! I had narrowed my choices of yote guns to 3 different calibers,.220 swift,.22-250 or .223. I was leaning towards the .223 anyway and then came up on a sweet deal from a dealer in VA.
Give me some reccomdations towards the right scope. I was looking at a 4x12x40 but i am still open to others. Not really sure what would be a good power. We cant hunt them at night if thats a factor.

Pends how big the pocket book is, leupold vari x III 4.5 x14 x50 with the new Boone and Crockett reticle would be nice, but it is pricey.

Well I have a Vari.X 111, 6.5-20x40 on my Browning 1885 in 22 Hornet and LOVE it. The AO actually lets me use the scope as a range finder. As a matter of fact I am going to get another one for my Rem.722/ 222. It is always a matter of personal taste, but I like to keep the scope down as close to the barrel as possible and prefer a scope no bigger than 40mm. But, your results may vary! I don't care how good the gun is, you can't shoot any better than you can see! I may sell the gun, but I won't sell the scopes.

I shoot a Remington 700 BDL in 22-250. I'm shooting 40 gr Hornady V-max at just over 4000 fps. Flatens coyotes in their tracks.

scott41069, I have the same gun with the thumbhole stock. I mounted a Sightron 6X24X40 MD on it,with leupold mounts and rings. The gun shoots .5@100yds. with my hand loads. I also have a 22-250 700 that my wife calls the MONEY PIT. It has had about everything done to it that can be done. It shoots under 1.00 @ 200yds. under ideal conditions. My 223 likes hand loads around 3150-3300fps. The 250 likes to run at 3750fps. I find myself shooting my 223's most of the time. As far as calling coyotes goes,I use a modfied mini14 in 223 for my call gun, works great when more than one comes in to the call. Ron S

I've got 3 that I use: all Remington 700s; my deer rifle (1966 vintage ADL) in .308 topped w/a Weaver 3x9 V9, a VLS in 22-250 topped w/a Simmons 2.8x12 ATEC, and my ML in 50 cal topped w/a Nikon 3x9 Buckmasters. I use the same loads I would for deer hunting in them. Check out the 1st one I've ever killed in the pictures section above.

I agree with Rifleman, the Leupold 4.5-14, I have one on my bushmaster varminter, and love it. I cant make myself look at other than leupold scopes as with lifetime warranty and great optics you cant beat it.. As for price, they are steep. but I rather buy one I know is good than two I thought were.

Chas I set up a Bushmaster super varminter last year and was impressed. Great trigger. With the one load I tried it shot under 3/4 moa( 5 shots) at 200 yds. Not too shabby, will probably shoot better with some load work. Scope was a Weaver grand slam, it was fair at best. I ordered a LEU Vari X III 3.5x10x40mm Matte with the B&C reticle on friday for my 700 30-06, looking forward to trying it out soon as well. Rman

:)I believe the type gun you buy - sporter, heavy varmint rifle, etc largely depends on your primary hunting conditions. I converted a Sav 10 223 to a sporter with a 24" barrel, and use a 3X12 md Sightron 11. Most coyotes I shoot are below 100yds and the closest was 1yd right behind me! 12 pwr, esp with MDs, is plenty adequate to 300yds. I shoot handloads of 40NBTs at 3720'/sec .6MOA 5-shot 100yd gps( has >6,000 rounds thru it).

The Bushnell Eliltes are fine scopes for the money, especially the 4200 series with rainguard. I like mine as well as my Leupolds.

I gotta believe a Leupold in 4.5 at least is the way to go, 6-18, 4.5-15 is all a good choice

Scott 41069, so what kind of scope did you end up with, or are you still thinkin on it? I havent bought a scope for it yet! I have some loads worked up for it but no scope on it yet... I kinda got side tracked with the purchase of other guns and optics. I have a .243 to use on the yotes also so i never got in a big hurry with the .223. I have been debating which scope to buy and unless i change my mind in the next week or two i will probably buy a Bushnell Elite 5x15x40. I have an Elite and a Leo 4.5x14.5x50 on other guns already and have been comparing the two. The bushnell seems to be the better deal. I know the quality of Leo is outstanding but i am just really impressed with the Elite line of scopes. The elite is about $200.00 less than the Leo. The Elite is brighter also. When buying scopes i know that less money normally equals a cheaper scope but the Elite seem to be great! I hope to find out soon.
