I want to take a coyote at 120 yards + or- five yards with a .17 Cal. HMR. Would dog food be a good bait or something else? Suggestions will be appreciated. Will I be attempting a shot longer than the .17 HMR with a 20 grain bullet handle well?

I do not know about dog food, but find a road killed deer and stake it out. They will come, guaranteed! Make sure you stake it down good or they will drag it off.

Ozark,
I think that ballistically you are at the extreme end of "bare minimum". I own a 17 HMR. Woodchucks have been shot out to 150 yds with this gun, including the 20 XTP. While definately better then the 17 gr bal tips, they have still run a ways with shoulder/lung hits. Sometimes it looks like they get swatted pretty good. Then they look like they recover from the impact and hobble towards their hole and die on the way.
If I were to attempt a shot on a Coyote at 120 yds, I would want him broadside and still. I would put it through the ribs and expect to kill him....after he runs a bit. May not get a blood trail and may be a good idea to have him in the open so you can watch where he goes for a while.
I would compare shooting a coyote with a 17 to shooting a deer with a 22 mag. Shot placement is everything.
My 17 is very accurate and chipmunks and red squirrels around camp are in deep dutch when it comes out to play.
I just bought some 20 grain FMJ for my friends son...I think they were CCI brand. We will shoot these into water jugs and wet newspaper and see if they hold together. It may be our chuck load this year if they show an ability to expand to any degree. Never know till you try.
Good luck.

ozark i agree with wilms, that mightbe pushing its limits, but it might not? id be going for a head shot, aim for the front base of the ear and it should drop. if you do a shoulder/boiler room shot i feel it will run a bit but it will be dead in the end.
wilms my hornady 20 grns are hollow points i didnt know any one else made a 20 grainer, ill have to check it out.
let u sknow the results. im dying to know how they work!!
