That looks nasty. Up here we don't have those but right now the concern is with west nile from the mosquitos. Lastest figures I've heard is 600 and some confirmed cases and 3 deaths.

Oldsnow, I use a spray on my clothing, Boots, Socks and anything where they may go called permanone, it lasts 14 days before needing retreatment, I also live Ocean View, De. I haven't had a chigger or tick since. Lou

After seeing your ankle, reminds me I had it like that a couple times. I don't care if the permanone sells for $20 a can I would buy it. I don't know why the good Lord put them on earth. Lou

Buying this store bought stuff isn't fair. I use a short weed called seedtick weed by old timers but I think its fancy name is peneroil. You make a sort of short broom out of it and whip your legs and trouser legs with it. Shoes too if you have shoes. It has an odor but not an unpleasant one and it works fine. Seriously that is what we used before they started selling the spray stuff.

I spray my clothing with permethrin any time I go into the woods. I got chiggers once read bad, never again. I got them right before I went on a hunting trip to Alaska, I scratched for several weeks while up there.
The chiggers are bad this year in Delaware, due to the dry conditions.

I had well over 600 bites 2 years ago and I'm not going to let that happen again. 5 of us were clearing stuff down at the cabin and at first some of the others thought it was poison ivy. We all had hundreds of bites.

They are awful when you get them. SPRAY FIRST. However, if you get them, you'll hear a dozen remedies about gasoline, kerosene, baths with clorox, you name it. Most are painful. Here's a trick that will work and doesn't hurt, in fact, it feels great. Run HOT bath water. When it's running, pour in a half box of baking powder and a bunch of table salt. Mix it up, get in. Submerge. Wait. If you have white walls and tub, you'll actually see a line of single file red, vacating the premises! Get some help and wipe 'em with wet toilet paper and flush 'em to oblivion.

Buckrub, I will have to pass that on to some of my buddies, and yes we have tried everything when we got them but nothing worked but spraying down before we head out to the woods.
