On the 13th ML deer season opens here. Weather forcast calls for a lot cooler weather by then. Today we dumped 250 pounds of corn and 250 pounds of chops into my feeder. Deer are now eating 250 pounds per week. Wildlife camera shows that many are using it. I have a permit for a doe and will probably use it. My son will be sitting in the hunting shack with me but he has to wait for a buck. We will take pictures.
Any deer we take will be processed at a nearby processing plant. The tenderloin and a couple pounds of ground venison will be ordered and the rest made into jerky. I figure we will get a couple deer easy enough.
We will both be using my Savage ML since he doesn't own one. Says he doesn't need to shoot my rifle in advance. He is retired from Special Forces and is a good shot. We have always used the same zero.
Last year the acorns fell just before ML season and the deer completely stopped using the feeder. No acorns this year so I don't have many doubts about killing my first deer with the ML.
I plan to take it to the range and confirm the zero with probably one shot tomorrow. Will be using a 250 grain XTP on first deer and 250 grain SST on the 2nd. Both with 42 grains of 4759 and a HPH #24 Sabot. I thought about putting this thread on the Savage section but decided that I am a deerhunter first and a Savage ML shooter 2nd. I have already told readers of the Savage section a lot more than I know so I elected to bore readers here.
