This afternoon found me and my hunting partner back in the woods. Things have changed and deer are scarce right now. Must have something to do with the coming rut. IMO the buck have rounded up the does and have them somewhere. Anyway we decided to try rattling up a buck. It was kind of windy, no, it was really windy and cold. First spot we tried was pretty slow. Did see a lone mulie doe with 2 fawns but they weren't on the agenda today. We managed to bring in one small mulie buck but he got a pass. We finally decided to move and on out way to another spot saw a respectable mulie buck but he was a long way off. I tried to get closer and got a far as I could until I was almost in the open. There was one lone small poplar and I got behind it and tried to use it as a rest. The deer was moving away from me and was in excess of 300 yds. I tried using the tree as a rest but with the wind it wasn't working to well. Most of the time he walking directly away from me and all I had to shoot at was his rear end. Not a shot I wanted to take and didn't. Finally he turn slightly offering a quartering away shot. Tried it and shot over him. Partner saw the dirt fly. The bullet hitting startled the deer and he turned back towards me. I tried a 2nd shot and plain and simple missed. We checked and no sign. Last I saw he had run a couple of hundred yard and was just fine. We then moved on to the spot we want to try and by this time we only had 45 minutes of daylight left. The wind had died down and we positioned ourselves on the top of a hill and my partner started rattling. I was faceing one way, he the other. All of sudden he whispered to no move, that there was a big mulie coming towards us. This was less than 10 minutes from the first rattle. I slowly turned and there he was at 100 yds. He was facing directly at us. I put the cross hairs on the front of his chest and squeezed. I heard the 165 grain interbond hit and he crumpled right there.
I don't know what path the bullet took after it hit but will find out tomorrow when I skin him an process the meat. I wanted to take a picture but to my dismay the battery in my digital was dead . I did take a picture with the camera in my cell phone and will post it tomorrow when I've downloaded it from the phone to my PC. Hope the quality is OK.
