As the subject says, tomorrow is our last day of hunting so I'll be out there. It's a little cold, and the over night forcast is for -28C, that's 18 below zero F and not expected to warm up until after noon . Anyway, can't let the last day of the hunting season go by without being out there
I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.
Good luck RAF. This is our last weekend of regular season. There are about 7-8 guys that will show up to camp. No bucks will get shot unless they are very big.....it's doe cull time. Started last 2 weekends and put down 12-13 so far.
We'll do 3-4 slow drives a day and standers will usually get deer standing still at close range....or they pass. Drivers may get deer on the cut-back too. Try only for mature does...no button bucks although 1-2 seem to get it each year.
The weekend after this is muzzle loader season and I'll have no choice but to use the Savage. Another doe cull weekend by the way.
Don't envy your frigid temps RAF! Do you do a lot of shooting with your Savage at -20 F? Work OK?

This was the last day here in the North Carolina mountains. We only have a three week season, and only one doe day, today! Well, it was only 30 degrees here. I went out, but no luck. I only got one deer this year, but he was a big one.
Well, the weather forcast was right on. It was -28 when we left. By the time we got to our hunting area it was -32 . I was well dress but after an hour in my blind my toes started to feel cold. Then my knee caps. Sitting with my knees bent caused the material in my pants and long johns to be stretched tight over my knee caps. Oh well. No deer were seen and didn't hear and shots in the area. My partner picked me up and we moved to another part of the pasture. Save several other hunters in the area. We tried another spot with no luck. Moved again and again no deer but did hear some shooting. We decided to make one more pass and all of a sudden spotted a deer. A mule skin head in the trees about 100 yds away through some trees. All I had was an off hand shot. No felt recoil from the 300 WSM and the deer hit the ground. I was pretty please with myself until I came up to the deer. Bullet hit about 8 inches back of where I was aiming and when butchering noted that about 6 inches if spinal column was gone along with the tenderloins and a good part of the the back straps . Exit hole was 1 1/2 times the size of my fist. There was a 2nd skin head with mine and my hunting partner took it. A quick field dressing and we were off again. One more turn around the pasture and then head for home. We came by an area we never hunted and notice no human foot prints either. Went in there to check and the bush exploded with deer. Whitetail bucks and does going every which way. Bush to thick to shoot but now we know where they were and why we didn't see much. I guess they got away from the pressure. This info will be priceless, next year
I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.
The deer was in the back of the truck for a couple of hours. When I got it home the meat on the hinds that was exposed was frozen. First time I've ever seen that .
I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.

So that is about -25 Fahrenheit. Great God that is cold! I have been in weather that cold, but the coldest I ever hunted in was 15 above Fahrenheit. Y'all are some hard core deer hunters, I congratulate you.
Anyway, here is your song by the Guess Who
I been hangin' around gas stations I been learnin' 'bout tires I been talkin' to grease monkeys I been workin' on cars
Moose Jaw saw a few, Moosomin too Runnin' back to Saskatoon Red Deer, Terrace and a Medicine Hat Sing another prairie tune
By the way, I have been to Saskatoon. I rode through on a Canada Pacific freight that I was hopping. Went from Calgary to Winnipeg. Very beautiful province in the summer, big wheat fields. This is a photo of young Simon Kenton riding through Saskatchewan at 70 mph. We hopped one of the spare engines, believe it or not! There was a catwalk outside, you could step out for some fresh air, pretty hot and noisy in the cab.
