Clarification Regarding Legal Muzzleloading Rifles and Gunpowder November 20, 2007 The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds hunters that the only legal muzzleloading rifles for hunting in New Jersey are flintlock and percussion cap rifles using black powder or black powder equivalents such as pyrodex or triple seven. Legal percussion rifles include in-line versions which use shotgun type primers as the percussion cap.
The recently introduced electronic ignition muzzleloading rifle is not legal for hunting in New Jersey. Additionally, some muzzleloader manufacturers advertise their rifles are capable of using modern smokeless gunpowder. However, the use of smokeless gunpowder in muzzleloading rifles is not legal in New Jersey. Hunters are advised to seek guidance from the Division by calling 609-292-6685 before purchasing any new technology firearm for use in New Jersey hunting seasons. Got this out of the game book in New Jersey

That is totally stupid if you have a gun like a Savage for example and the gun is capable of shooting smokeless what's the difference. Pyrodex is a legal to use however if you look at the back of the container of pyrodex it states that Pyrodex is a smokeless propellant. As far as the Electra is concerned there are quite a few shops in nj. that are carrying them I guess they don't realize they are legal either.

I just read the latest big game regs for Colorado, and the Electra is also illegal, but only during muzzleloading season. It can be used during regular rifle seasons.

In Michigan the Electra is legal but you can't use smokeless powder in a muzzleloader. Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

it is sad that these people that run these departments are so out of date . they need to pull their heads out and look around because we are in the 21st century. most of the regulations are out of date and most of the people that make the regulations don't know the difference anyway because they got their job because of either someone they know or are related to. vote for larry the cable guy!!

Even if some of these legislators did pull their heads out and looked around, I don't think they would know what they're looking for in terms of what we are talking about here.
These folks have probably never hunted or studied ballistics. If they eat meat, they bought it off a shelf. If they ever shot a gun, all they did was pull the trigger. All thought and conjecture ended there.
The hunting and shooting community seems to be a dying breed as we know it. Law makers put no time at all in addressing our sport because there are bigger fish to fry for them.
I'm sure that when it comes to financing major projects, schools and infrastructure they are surrounded by advisors that can educate them on what they need to focus on. Guns and hunting? Nah.
