My son is doing the work and I'm writing the checks on a Remington 600 action that belonged to my Dad. We've been into the project for several months now and hopefully it will be completed by Fall. We've rebarrelled the action with a 20 inch Shilen Match grade in .308 Win. The stock is a Bastogne Walnut blank from Paul Dressel. We've replaced the plastic floor plate with a metal one. A steel grip cap plus inletted sling swivels will be installed soon. We also installed an ebony forend. The bluing will be a slow rust by a local gunsmith and I plan to send it off to get checkered after the hunting season. As to the finish on the stock...I love an oil finish but am concerned about water and humidity...as a result we're still thinking.
Synthetic is nice but I like a pretty gun!

Synthetic is nice but I like a pretty gun! 308XP Welcome to the forum 308XP. It sounds like a beautiful rifle your son is building there. What type of oil are you thinking about for a finish? If the rifle is to be used this fall, keep in mind that any finish will likely still be soft. I don't know what state you live in, but we're in the southwest portion of VA. It's humid a plenty (although further south is worse than us) and we've used true oil on our rifles with out any problems due to humidty or rain. Just make sure (and I'm sure you know this) to put a couple of light coats (we often use the spray true oil for this) in the barrel channel to help seal the wood. When the rifle is finished, please send some pictures or post them here for us all to see.

I've used Tru Oil before and had good results. We're down here in middle GA. and Hummiditity is something I understand. We've used Pro Custom Gun Oil as well as Tung Oil and Linseed Oil. My preference is the look that Kimber gets on their rifles. I just don't know what they use. Any ideas? I'm certainly not a big fan of Hi Gloss even though I have a few of those. They're just not my choice.

I don't know what Kimber uses on their rifles. In fact I don't believe I've ever even seen one of their rifles.
I don't recall what it is, but Doug used to use something on the stocks when a duller finish is requested (it might be stock sheen and conditioner).

Hello all Looks like everyone is building a new rifle. I would have been but when I talked to John at October Country after he built another rifle for me, he told me he wasn't building anymore. Don't know who to get to build Engish style rifles. John sure did nice work.

Mamaflinter October Country was building a "Great American Spoting Rifle" in 69cal built along the lines suggested by Forsythe. Shallow groove and very slow twist, like1:104 English style hammer rifle. I was going to have it made for LH. Oh say 30 inch barrel with a maple stock I had a few other things I was going to have done but when all was said and done it was going to cost me as much as my four bore did and that rifle started out a lot more then a 69cal. I mean a lot more! I really wanted that rifle. But anyway does that did you an idea of what I was after ? I dont know who else builds this type of rifle. Any suggestions ?

I'm refinishing a .62cal. Virginia smooth rifle I just got done with. It was my first build attempt and kinda got in a hurry to get it ready for this spring gobbler season. I'm waiting on a Pecatonic kit now..54cal. 38" "C" profile Rice barrel, Bucks Co. grade 3 maple stock and Chamber's Deluxe Siler lock. Hope to have it put together before this deer season.
