Does anybody do anything special to areas like the barrel channel to protect the barrel. Previous post covered sealing of the wood. I have only shot hooked breech guns where the barrel is removed on a regular basis. I have read guys say they applied a heavy coat of bees wax. Seems to me a coat of bore butter of anything like that would be good enough?

When I finish a rifle I seal the edge of the barrel channel with a soft past wax. Have used bore butter, beeswax mixture, etc. before also whe hunting. Anything to seal it up. When I hunt & know it may rain or snow I just take a glob or it on my index finger & run it down the barrel channel & then wipe off the excess & go. Never have had any problems with one rusting underneath. When I put a new barrel in the channeel for the last time I grease the bottom of the barrel also.

Why not put on a couple coats of a good auto polish on the metal parts and you will not have to worry about water, rust, etc.

I bought a lock once and the company told me to put car polish on the plate. Why?Wouldn't that just keep it nice and shiney like brand new?

Waxing an action, or lock plate will only shine as much as the polishing that was done on the firearm; re; a mirror polishing will give a high degree of shine waxed or not waxed. Most hunting firearms are not polished to that degree, hence a matte polishing will give a matte shine when waxed. I have waxed my guns for about 20 years and have had no problem with glare from waxing revealing my position to an animal.
If you are concerned about shine on metal surfaces, on your lock plate etc., contact me and I can give you a procedure to dull the metal's surface that is very easy to do, and will cost very little.

I usually wax the bottom of the barrel, but a quick coat of varnish will work even better.
